Advice on the name Seren

Hello,
I am pregnant with a baby girl, i really want to call her Seren- although sadly my parents don't like the name... what are your thoughts? is it a girly pretty name?

The definition of Seren in Welsh, means star and i love the meaning. I was thinking of making her name sort of fairylike? (as the name means star)

does anybody have any ideas?

thank you very much

from romy

Lovely name, it was on my list for both my DCs but they turned out to be boys!

It's a great combination of pretty, strong and not too overused.

Your parents have had their go at naming (their own) kids, now it's your turn!

If they complain about Seren you could remind them there's far worse out there - my Welsh MIL wanted my DC to be called Blodwen or Buddug if they were girls Confused

Nice name.

Don't discuss names with your parents (or anyone else)

spiderlight · 22/11/2023 20:13

It's a gorgeous name. I'm Welsh and I only know one - she's lovely. I only had a boy, but Seren was one of my top two names for a girl (the other being Freya), and I would have used the middle name Rhiannon.

Seren is very pretty.
Parents opinion doesn't matter. They had their turn to choose a name when they had their own children. Now it's your turn.
Serena is also pretty.

piscofrisco · 22/11/2023 20:18

I think it's lovely! And your parents will too when they see her I'm sure.

Seren is lovely. Start of Serenity as well as meaning star.

Seren Faye
Seren Willow
Seren Skye

It's really important that you don't knuckle under to your parents on this. Choosing your child's name is such a personal thing that only a parent can do - start as you mean to go on, and calmly but firmly insist that you are this child's mother and this decision is yours to make. You'll need to assert yourself over a hundred decisions once your child is here, so start now!

ReadtheReviews · 22/11/2023 20:21

My mum and partners dad were anti my second child's name. He claimed never to have heard of it, she said it was very plain.
Now they both see how cute it is on her.
You get to name her OP. Keep your decision to yourself and let them stew.

thank you very much, it's just im only 17. im living with my parents and sadly the father of my child doesn't want to be involved

When you're a young mum, it can be difficult to be MUM, rather than a child to your parents. This is an easy, simple way to assert that you are the mum.

And Seren is lovely.

Workawayxx · 22/11/2023 20:23

@InterSteller , my Welsh MIL wanted my DC to be called Blodwen or Buddug
Blodwen is a great-grandmother's name and not in a good way. Buddug is lovely and underused.

NormalForNuneaton · 22/11/2023 20:25

It's a lovely name.

I only know of one Seren , a friend of my 19yo DS.

Go for it. It's not your parent's baby, they'll get over the name.

After all, it's not as though you're choosing something outlandish or crazy like Prosecco or Moon Unit

Blazingunicorns · 22/11/2023 20:26

Beautiful name!

ReviewingTheSituation · 22/11/2023 20:26

It's an absolutely lovely name. And seems to be a very rare breed on here, as it appears to be universally liked! That never happens on this board.

You should definitely use it if it's the right name for you.

JeeezeLouise · 22/11/2023 21:04

Love it

Backinthedress · 22/11/2023 21:29

I know two pre teen Serens. It's lovely and suits them.

PickledScrump · 22/11/2023 21:51

It’s my daughter’s middle name and we’ve only ever had compliments on it. The only other one I know is 10. Wouldn’t say it’s overused at all. Don’t tell people your name choices, they always give their opinion.

if you want it fairy like how about Seren Fay? Fay means fairy so would be star fairy.

SingingSands · 22/11/2023 22:08

Seren is beautiful, you've chosen a lovely name for your baby daughter x

tillytoodles1 · 22/11/2023 22:12

It's a lovely name. I live in Wales and have met a few.

Stringagal · 22/11/2023 22:19

I love Seren, if I’d had another girl it would’ve been her name. I think your parents just need time to get used to it, they’ve probably not heard of it so to them it sounds strange or made up.

Another gorgeous name is Sylvie. So sweet!

AdultLounge · 22/11/2023 22:24

It's a lovely name.

Top tip from an old biddy. If you continue to use Mumsnet for advice, which I hope you do. It can be a wonderful supportive place, I suggest you change your username to something less identifiable.

And remember not everyone is who they say they are on here.

Good luck with your new baby.

Sodie · 22/11/2023 22:32

It's very popular here (below the landsker line pembrokeshire), and I've never heard it pronounced correctly just serun or serin.

WanderingWitches · 22/11/2023 22:45

Great choice of name!
Honestly, ignore your parents. It's your baby, and you are the one who names her.

TheFireflies · 22/11/2023 22:55

It’s a beautiful name

Velvetbee · 22/11/2023 23:03

Beautiful.
