Advice on the name Seren

Hello,
I am pregnant with a baby girl, i really want to call her Seren- although sadly my parents don't like the name... what are your thoughts? is it a girly pretty name?

The definition of Seren in Welsh, means star and i love the meaning. I was thinking of making her name sort of fairylike? (as the name means star)

does anybody have any ideas?

thank you very much

from romy

I know two Serens

One is my niece. Who is wonderful.

The other is a friend's daughter. Also wonderful.

Devonchills · 22/11/2023 16:48

It's a beautiful Welsh name, I love it.

bitchatty · 22/11/2023 16:48

You’re in for a rough ride OP if your parents

a) think they can piss over your parade like this
b) you are so bothered by their view

Aquamarine1029 · 22/11/2023 16:50

Seren is absolutely beautiful and what on earth does your parents' opinion have to do with anything? This is your baby, not theirs.

You had best establish very clear boundaries right now

MonsteraMama · 22/11/2023 16:51

I'm Welsh and I think it's a lovely name, I know a couple of Serens.

It's also actually none of your parent's business what you call your child. If you like the name, use it! It's very pretty.

RestingMurderousFace · 22/11/2023 16:51

I know of one. Lovely name.

I love it, too.
I thought Seren Luna ( star / moon).
Best of luck, Romy ❤️

ForeverYellow · 22/11/2023 16:53

I had never heard of the name until I taught a Seren and my first thought ( and I still think ) is that it is a lovely name . I didn’t even know what it means , but now I like it even more .

i hear your view but i love it so much and think that i will go for it, and would love your support no matter what i select

idontlikealdi · 22/11/2023 16:54

I like them both

ErrolTheDragon · 22/11/2023 16:55

It's a lovely name. Pretty without being excessively 'girly'.

Fwiw before we had DD, and hadn't told anyone which names we were considering, MiL announced that the one name she absolutely couldn't stand was ... the one we preferred. (Reminded her of a girl she'd known when she was growing up).

We said nothing, went ahead and used the name and never heard another word against it, MiL adored her GD.

I had my daughter at 16 and chose a name my parents didn't like, they got over it! She's your baby, call her something you love, everyone else will learn to love it once they meet her anyway.

HelenaCh9 · 22/11/2023 16:56

I live in a bit of a yummy-mummy part of England (rather than Wales) and I’ve come across a few now in their teens but no little ones. I’ve always thought it was attractive. I didn’t know its meaning until today.

It doesn’t matter what names your parents like. They’ve had their turn at naming children. It’s your turn now.

Good luck with the birth.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 22/11/2023 16:56

It's pretty overused now and very few English people can pronounce it correctly.

LoveThisDog · 22/11/2023 17:00

Use the name you love. Your parents will grow to love it because it's their granddaughter's name and they love her.
Seren is a beautiful name!

I would ask your midwife if they can put you in touch with any support groups for any other pregnant young mums. Xx

Jasmin1971 · 22/11/2023 17:04

I think it's lovely.

There is also Selene meaning moon

caringcarer · 22/11/2023 17:25

What about Serena. You could call her Seren.

DaizenShine · 22/11/2023 17:26

It's a beautiful name, Romy.

My daughter is called Romy too, my family didn't like that name. It's your baby, don't let them influence you. Keep it quiet until she's born if you need x

rosseyv · 22/11/2023 17:27

Stunning name.

zurala · 22/11/2023 17:28

Seren is a beautiful name

My dad didn't like the name we chose for DS. He actually screwed his face up when we told him. I ignored him. You should ignore your parents on this too.

C8H10N4O2 · 22/11/2023 17:41

Its not your parents' baby. If they were warning against a name due to unintended meaning or similar that is fair enough but its a perfectly nice name, not difficult to pronounce or spell and its up to you.

Do your parents listen to The Archers by any chance?

Forestdweller11 · 22/11/2023 17:48

One of the twins on the archers is a Seren. It's a beautiful name.

FMLife · 22/11/2023 18:02

Omg no. Enough with the fucking Luna middle name. Oh it’s awful and so overplayed!
