Candy?

takemeoutonight · 30/10/2023 23:04

TTC at the moment with 3rd baby.
Thoughts on Candy, Candida, Clemence or Clementine?
To provide some context and not drip feed:

Candy/Candida- inspired by keyboardist Candida Doyle (of Pulp fame)

Clemence- after a character in a book

Clementine- similar to Clemence and maybe more socially accepted

Thoughts welcome but please explain your reasoning if you dislike the names. Also open to other suggestions!

Candida is yeast that is responsible for infections like thrush and vaginal yeast infections

Clemence is nice pronounced the French way.

RudolphTheRedNosedSpaniel · 30/10/2023 23:08

I like Clementine it's cute. But I don't like Clem or Clemmy

I agree I don't like Clemmy either. Not sure why but the sound just seems not quite right to me.

But isn't that because of the meaning which is simply "white"? It's a saint's name.

How about....

Claudia
Chloe
Callie
Camille (also french pronunciation)
Celeste

Needaholi · 30/10/2023 23:10

Clementine is the best of a (bad) bunch

RudolphTheRedNosedSpaniel · 30/10/2023 23:07

This

Yup, this.

Candy is another way of talking about sweets.

Clementine is a fruit.

I'm just not keen on children being called after 'things'. I prefer people names, for people.

takemeoutonight · 30/10/2023 23:11

RudolphTheRedNosedSpaniel · 30/10/2023 23:07

Clemence is nice pronounced the French way.

Oh what's the French way? Now wondering if I pronounce it correctly!

WanderingWitches · 30/10/2023 23:11

I'm sorry op, but none are nice.
Candy is sweets, Candida is thrush and I hate the sound of Clem which is what the other two will be shortened to.

haribosmarties · 30/10/2023 23:12

Have you considered Candice? It sounds less like thrush than Candida and you can still use the shortened form 'Candy'
I really love both Clemence and Clementine.. but yeah Clemmy isn't a nice sounding nickname. I know a Clementine and she does go by Clemmy which she likes but I personally think it's a grim sounding nickname for such a lovely longer name

MoonlightMuse · 30/10/2023 23:13

takemeoutonight · 30/10/2023 23:10

People are far more likely to associate it with thrush than a saint. Please don’t do that to your daughter

takemeoutonight · 30/10/2023 23:17

@MoonlightMuse that is a fair point. I genuinely didn't make that connection but after a quick Google I do see what you mean. It does bring up yeast infection rather than name! That'll be that name off the list then 😳

Ooo yes Candice is cool!

Dani2206 · 30/10/2023 23:17

I love candy! Also as another poster said candice

takemeoutonight · 30/10/2023 23:19

@haribosmarties I like Candice but I know someone who has a girl named this already (close friend) Thanku though.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2023 23:19

Clemmy sounds wrong because it's too much like clammy (which is what my autocorrect wanted to turn it into).

Clementine is an oddly humorous song about a girl who died, or a fruit.

Candida ... nope.

Clemence is ok but may be mistaken for Clemency which is ok if you like 'virtue' names.

Any of the alternatives suggested on the thread are better tbh.

MoulinPouge · 30/10/2023 23:20

Candida is the fungus that causes thrush and ringworm. Would absolutely rule this one out, personally. It's widely available info that most people would associate immediately.

Candice maybe? Though I personally am not a big fan of Candy as a name, it feels too sweet and sickly and a bit American hillbilly?

Names that feel similar to Candy but which don't have quite the same not-so-good associations (and perhaps have a similar more classic vibe as Clemence or Clementine):

Tabby / Tabitha
Coco / Connie / Constance
Posie / Posy / Josephine
Kit / Kitty / Katherine
Juni / Juniper
Wendy / Gwendolyn
Sadie or Zadie

If you like the meaning "white", what about Alba?

I think Clemence or Clementine are both nice. I also don't like Clemmy but Emmy seems a reasonable alternative as a diminutive.

I wonder if you would also like Selene or Celeste as unusual names with a similar feel.

RudolphTheRedNosedSpaniel · 30/10/2023 23:22

Cecilia or Cecile is lovely too

User1786 · 30/10/2023 23:23

Clementine is really nice but the contractions are unpleasant. Clemmy sounds like clammy and my autocorrect agrees. Clem sounds like a dirty old man.
Clemence sounds like an old man probably nicknamed Clem or Clemmy
Candida is thrush.
Candy sounds like a strippers name in some US show

SleepingStandingUp · 30/10/2023 23:38

See you've seen the light that on calling her Yeast Infection.

Clementine is nice, Clem is nice, you'd just have to ward off the Clemmie's.

How about Camilia? Not like the queen. Second i not l

salamithumbs · 30/10/2023 23:45

Agree that Candida is too strongly associated with thrush. I like Clementine (not clem or clemmy though) but I think Clemence sounds OK, maybe a bit holy/virtuous somehow for my taste!

Names with similar sounds:
Clara
Clarice

Clarinda
Camellia
Camila

Cara

Cassandra
Coralie
Cora
Carina
