This is a slightly unconventional name but im a big fan and I think it is very cool and also unisex. Thoughts?

Padro is a Catalan word meaning the registrar of inhabitants in a municipality. It is also the brand name of a Catalan vermouth.

SnowyPetals · 24/10/2023 16:08

To me it sounds very masculine, either like Pedro, or even the likes of Arlo and Milo. I don't think it's wise to saddle a child with any name they will have to spell out and/or explain for most of their life.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/10/2023 16:08

Padra/Paidra is nicer

maddiemookins16mum · 24/10/2023 16:09

This is one of the worst ever offered up on the names thread.

I bet those saying they like it would have never dreamed of naming their child this.

EtiennePalmiere · 25/10/2023 17:26

I too I think of priests. Petra is a lovely feminine name that sounds similar.

ISeeTheLight · 25/10/2023 17:33

Erm no way to masculine. It's very close to Padre which means, as well as priest, FATHER! Please don't call your daughter Padro.

nettie434 · 25/10/2023 17:52

I think it sounds too masculine. You would have to be sure your daughter was a very self confident person to cope with all the comments she's likely to receive. What about Pida? That has got a nice meaning (seeker of wisdom or knowledge) and is so unusual it doesn't fit into the boy's/girl's name divide.

StoatofDisarray · 25/10/2023 17:59

No, it's daft.

dontforgetme · 25/10/2023 18:01

@PurpleChrayne that made me laugh out loud! Why the midlands? Grin

dontforgetme · 25/10/2023 18:04

For what it's worth op, I really like it!

TheaBrandt · 25/10/2023 18:06

Yeah that’s pretty bad op. Are you mid pregnancy? I came up with some right corkers at that stage. My teens are horrified by some of the names we considered. Your poor kid has to go through life actually called it.

Try it out yourself when meeting new people. If you have a moments cringe about introducing yourself there’s your answer.

therealcookiemonster · 25/10/2023 18:24

just when I thought I had seen it all. please don't do it OP. your child is not your possession. she will grow to be her own woman... give her a name she will love

therealcookiemonster · 25/10/2023 18:27

agree with @EtiennePalmiere petra is lovely

and with padro you know what the nickname will be, right?

Justbefore · 25/10/2023 18:28

Nope. Sounds like Padre Pedro.

Pick a name your daughter will love and think pretty.

Butterkist8 · 25/10/2023 18:29

It's a male name.

UsingChangeofName · 25/10/2023 18:30

No, for all the reasons already said.

Lilibert456 · 25/10/2023 18:31

Poor child. Why saddle her with an ugly name when there are many pretty feminine names you could give her.

inquisitiveinga · 25/10/2023 18:35

No no no. If you are mid pregnancy as PP suggested, move away from the name game NOW! 🤣

When I was half way through with DS1 I was convinced on calling him Forrest. Thankfully it did not come to fruition, but the mind can think that mental ideas are completely sane with a concoction of hormones...

Purpleavocado · 25/10/2023 18:36

Sounds like something Del Boy would say, poor child!

BitofaStramash · 25/10/2023 18:36

No

Pushkinini · 25/10/2023 18:57

Awful.

itsmyp4rty · 25/10/2023 18:59

It's like you were expecting to call a boy Pedro and got a girl instead, panicked and made something up that sounded similar.

From what you've said it sounds like you trying to be cool. It just makes me think of the Spanish word Padre though and so sounds very masculine.

What about Paloma? Spanish, not widely used in the Uk so unusual but known (ie Paloma Faith), means dove.

GroanWoman · 26/10/2023 01:31

Bloody awful.

noooooooo · 26/10/2023 01:56

Agree with @alrighthen I like it a lot. One caveat - surnames, yes, Padro sounds strong cool and modern. Padro Jones. Padro Freeman. Padro just about any continental name whatsoever.

Whereas, put Padro with something like McGlynn or McNamara, say, and it’s kinda giving much-loved Irish footballer.

groovergirl · 26/10/2023 02:07

Please don't. As a PP said, Padro is a nice name ... for a dog. A male dog.
