Is Rory too popular?

Really love Rory, but I've heard it's number 9.

Do you know many Rory's?

I've also heard that popular names aren't as popular as you'd think, due to there being so many different names now. In 2021, there were 3.6k baby girls named Olivia in the UK, which was the no.1 name that year - not that many really! So maybe I shouldn't worry about the list that much. But, I don't want him to be Rory SURNAME in his class either 🤦‍♀️

I have a 12 year old Rory - he was the only on his class. I know very few Rory's and don’t think it’s ever been in the top ten.

Go for it - great name

Bluemoonto · 22/10/2023 21:35

I didn’t think Rory was that popular? I vaguely know two, both around 6. Like you say, even the most popular names aren’t that popular these days.

Orphlids · 22/10/2023 21:37

Yeah, loads of little Rorys. Boys and girls as well now. It’s becoming so commonplace round here that it’s one of those names that doesn’t even really register when I hear it anymore. Although I have noticed a lot of the parents seem to be under the impression they have chosen a rather daring and unusual name.

SoTiredOfIt · 22/10/2023 21:44

I know a couple. Fab name.
Go for it!

Bibbitybobbitty · 22/10/2023 21:46

Depends where you are, Scotland likely to be several in a class.

QuiltedHippo · 22/10/2023 21:49

It's 39th not 9th but very much an upward trajectory. I imagine it will keep rising, but it's a great name so that's why!

Combusting · 22/10/2023 21:51

As a Rory Gilmore fan go for it!

Pinkshoppingbag · 22/10/2023 21:54

I know 3 all ages between 3 and 7.

mrsdolittle · 22/10/2023 21:54

I have a Rory and he's nearly 20. I love his name and am so glad I chose it. Go with your gut - if you love a name go for it - who cares if it's popular 😊

HorseOutside · 22/10/2023 21:54

I think I started a trend - mine is 25. It was very unusual when he was born, I thought I was being quite 'out there', as it was a bit 'daring and unusual' back then. I still absolutely love it.

Runforhome · 22/10/2023 21:56

Mine’s 31 , I must have been ahead of the trend.

HorseOutside · 22/10/2023 22:03

OK @Runforhome you got there first! Grin

Alloveragain3 · 22/10/2023 22:10

To me it's a boy's name, which means 'red king' in Irish.

So several red head boy's I knew going up were called Rory (though usually spelled in the Irish way!).

Pumpkinpuddin · 22/10/2023 22:11

Sorry, 9th in Scotland! We stay in Scotland.

Nice to hear mostly positive comments on the name!

It's a lovely name, but very popular around here (middle class pocket of the North West). My son is 2 and I've met several from 0-3 through baby classes and at nursery.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 22/10/2023 22:26

Henry and Jordan are both in course to get their heart broken.

Isometimeswonder · 22/10/2023 22:26

Great name for a dog.

EddieHowesShithousingMags · 22/10/2023 22:27

Oh bugger I thought I was on the BB threads 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Rory is a fabulous name. I have a teen one!

Blessedbethefruitz · 22/10/2023 22:43

There's one at the park we go to often, but no others in our 2 form reception year in a southeast town... It's definitely on the up though and was in the top 100 4 years ago. I've only ever known 1 as an adult, 3 if you count the politician and the Gilmore girl ;)

theduchessofspork · 22/10/2023 22:47

I know two under 4s so I think so, and in Scotland I’m guessing more so.

It’s a great name, but the number of similar names that are popular right now - Roman, Reuben, Rowan, Robin, Ruby - would put me off a bit, as well as Rory being popular in its own right

Tilllly · 22/10/2023 22:54

Combusting · 22/10/2023 21:51

As a Rory Gilmore fan go for it!

Edited

👋🏻 me too!

RudsyFarmer · 22/10/2023 22:57

I know zero Rory’s and know around 400 children by name! So not popular at all around my way.

nearlywinteragain · 22/10/2023 23:18

In Scotland yes, but it is a good name. There shouldn't be that many in any individual group.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/10/2023 23:30

I love Rory
