Is Rory too popular?

Really love Rory, but I've heard it's number 9.

Do you know many Rory's?

I've also heard that popular names aren't as popular as you'd think, due to there being so many different names now. In 2021, there were 3.6k baby girls named Olivia in the UK, which was the no.1 name that year - not that many really! So maybe I shouldn't worry about the list that much. But, I don't want him to be Rory SURNAME in his class either 🤦‍♀️

I have a 5 year old Rory. He's the only one in his year (3 form entry)

I know quite a few, both my children have a couple in their year group and I have heard of a few new babies called it too.

Pixie2015 · 23/10/2023 19:20

I love it

The only real problem with Rory is if people have problems saying the letter "R".

That's going to happen in Scotland though is it.

It’s a lovely name.

I don’t think you can spend too much time worrying about whether your child will be one of several in the class when choosing a name as some of that is just luck. I am a teacher and have taught a class before where the only 2 girls in my class (special school) had the same uncommon name, I have never met any other children with the name before or since and parents probably thought it was unusual when choosing it! Bad luck but that’s the way it can be, on the other hand I have also taught children with the #1 baby name who were the only ones in their class.

Even if your child is one of several in their class, it doesn’t really matter. I have the #1 baby name of the year I was born, within both of my two main friendship groups there is another with the same name as me. It doesn’t matter to me, if anything it possibly made it easier to befriend those two as as least we had a talking point in the early days!

You can't really name your child on whether someone you have never met may have a lisp.

I've been teaching for nearly 15 years, never taught a Rory. But then I don't know any kids under 7, so no idea how many of them there are in nursery or reception!

I teach in Scotland (primary) and we don’t have any at our school..
