How would you pronounce this girl’s name?

Due our third girl in January and a name that was on our original list from #1 has came back round…Blythe. We both really like it and were almost decided on it until I mentioned it to my sister in law (I know, you shouldn’t). I had text it to her but when I saw her she was saying it but she was saying it differently to how I would. I didn’t say anything but I’ve since looked it up and it seems there are two ways to pronounce it and both are used, no one seems to know which is right.

How would you say Blythe?
Option 1: the ending sounds like the ‘the’ in bathe
Option 2: the ending sounds like the ‘the’ in bath?

Sorry no easier way of explaining 😆

Fourlegsandatail · 21/10/2023 18:49

Option 1 - it would rhyme with ‘alive’

MsBlythe · 21/10/2023 18:52

NC! This may or may not be one of my names 😀.

It's definitely like the the in bathe. Not bath.

It's beautiful, and I love it!

Though rocker Randy Blythe pronounces his surname as Bly, with the the silent!

FayCarew · 21/10/2023 18:52

Like Blithe. The TH is like the TH in Heather or Breathing.

HuntingoftheSnark · 21/10/2023 18:57

Option 1. As in Blithe Spirit.

cocksstrideintheevening · 21/10/2023 18:58

I can't understand how 2 would sound. It would be Blythe like writhe as pp said. I love it is a name.

Almostautumn2023 · 21/10/2023 19:00

Like bonny and blithe.

Floralnomad · 21/10/2023 19:00

Definitely so it rhymes with writhe so option 1 . I’ve never heard it pronounced any differently.

DaftQuestionForToday · 21/10/2023 19:16

naturally:

Bly (like Fly) Th (like thought)

but I knew girls who pronounce their names differently & after being introduced, just pronounce it how they prefer 💁🏻‍♀️

Suunnyd · 21/10/2023 19:18

Im not sure but i think im option 2 - I would say Bl - i - th. Im in Scotland if that makes a difference?
