How would you pronounce this girl’s name?

Due our third girl in January and a name that was on our original list from #1 has came back round…Blythe. We both really like it and were almost decided on it until I mentioned it to my sister in law (I know, you shouldn’t). I had text it to her but when I saw her she was saying it but she was saying it differently to how I would. I didn’t say anything but I’ve since looked it up and it seems there are two ways to pronounce it and both are used, no one seems to know which is right.

How would you say Blythe?
Option 1: the ending sounds like the ‘the’ in bathe
Option 2: the ending sounds like the ‘the’ in bath?

Sorry no easier way of explaining 😆

To rhyme with "scythe"

Ilikeyourdecor · 21/10/2023 19:34

I don't understand the difference between the two options, but agree with pp that I'd rhyme it with blithe, writhe, tithe etc.

Almostautumn2023 · 21/10/2023 19:37

Imagining your last name is Smyth now.

TenThousandSpoons · 21/10/2023 19:38

Option 1.

Neighbours87 · 21/10/2023 19:39

Can’t really understand your options OP abut I would pronounce it to rhyme with scythe. Like the actress Blythe Danner

MolkosTeenageAngst · 21/10/2023 19:41

I don’t understand the options, the th sound at the end of bathe and bath sound the same to me, it’s only the a vowel sound that is different?

Essenceofpetunia · 21/10/2023 19:43

@Ilikeyourdecor See if it helps to say these out loud so you can hear the difference between the sounds:

First option = ‘those’ or ‘that’
Second option = ‘thing’ or ‘thesis’

BCBird · 21/10/2023 19:44

Option 1

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 21/10/2023 19:46

Option 1. Lovely name.

Ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyourbiscuit · 21/10/2023 19:48

Blythe like writhe

Rosykitten · 21/10/2023 19:50

It's Blythe to rhyme with Jive.

Lovely name BTW.

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 19:50

As in ‘the’ to rhyme with five.

43ontherocksporfavor · 21/10/2023 19:51

Yes writhe! That’s a better example.

DisforDarkChocolate · 21/10/2023 19:51

Option 1, the other way is just odd.

daisypond · 21/10/2023 19:52

Option 1.
Option 2 doesn’t sound right at all.

SummerInSun · 21/10/2023 19:54

As with everyone else - Blythe rhymes with writhe. I knew someone named that - absolutely lovely name.

ermno3 · 21/10/2023 19:55

Option 1. I know one and I don't think she's had any pronunciation issues. I like it.

nancypowers1983 · 21/10/2023 20:01

FayCarew · 21/10/2023 18:52

Like Blithe. The TH is like the TH in Heather or Breathing.

This is the clearest and most accurate explanation!

nancypowers1983 · 21/10/2023 20:03

Rosykitten · 21/10/2023 19:50

It's Blythe to rhyme with Jive.

Lovely name BTW.

Then it would be Blive surely, or Blyve? It doesn't rhyme with Jive those the I sound is the same.

theduchessofspork · 21/10/2023 20:03

Option 1 is the only way

nancypowers1983 · 21/10/2023 20:04

*though not those

<curses MN app not having an edit option>

Babynamessss · 21/10/2023 20:09

Okay so it seems option 1 is definitely the majority but accents do make a difference to it. It’s when it’s quite an unusual name that I just worry it might be one of those ones where she’d have to keep telling people how it’s said but after reading your responses maybe not 😊 Thanks for the nice replies too.. expected it might be ripped to shreds on here 🤣

ValancyRedfern · 21/10/2023 20:10

I would definitely go 1. To me I think of Gilbert Blythe in Anne of Green Gables or the town in Northumberland. Never heard it pronounced with an unvoiced 'th'

nancypowers1983 · 21/10/2023 20:10

@Babynamessss it's a gorgeous name and quite a traditional one at that. Well it is where I stay anyway. Lovely choice.

BouncyBallBall · 21/10/2023 20:11

thesnailandthewhale · 21/10/2023 19:01

I was born in Blythe but made in the Royal Navy

very good
