How would you pronounce this girl’s name?

Due our third girl in January and a name that was on our original list from #1 has came back round…Blythe. We both really like it and were almost decided on it until I mentioned it to my sister in law (I know, you shouldn’t). I had text it to her but when I saw her she was saying it but she was saying it differently to how I would. I didn’t say anything but I’ve since looked it up and it seems there are two ways to pronounce it and both are used, no one seems to know which is right.

How would you say Blythe?
Option 1: the ending sounds like the ‘the’ in bathe
Option 2: the ending sounds like the ‘the’ in bath?

Sorry no easier way of explaining 😆

I'm not sure I understand the difference between the ending of bathe and the the ending of bath. For me the difference between those two words is in the a sound.

Yup

ThePaperTrail · 22/10/2023 07:18

Voiced 'th', so option 1.

To rhyme with tithe, scythe, writhe etc. as pps have said.

It's the same difference between 'breath' and 'breathe' (think about the difference between how you'd say 'take a breath' versus 'breathe slowly') and 'bath' and 'bathe' ('take a bath' versus 'sunbathe').

NewShoes · 22/10/2023 13:59

Option 1 for sure- haven’t heard it pronounced any other way. It’s a lovely name!

Notmetoo · 22/10/2023 14:02

Sorry I don't understand the options but I would pronounce it to rhyme with scythe The same way I would pronounce the first word from the film Blithe Spirit .

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 22/10/2023 14:02

Another vote for option 1.

Can't say I like it much, personally, but if you love it, go for it!

I love that film Wink

YokoOnosBigHat · 22/10/2023 14:16

To rhyme with "hive" in my London accent.

17caterpillars1mouse · 23/10/2023 09:20

I've always thought it was b-life

Gnomegnomegnome · 23/10/2023 09:27

Teethe and teeth work better for me!

I say it like teethe.

Beautiful name (and I love the doll).

Twoshoesnewshoes · 21/10/2023 18:48

Option one

like scythe I guess

Yes I can't work out your pronunciations but if rhyme it was scythe

DeathRattleDazzle · 23/10/2023 09:33

So funny that people can't understand what option 2 would be! Must be accent related as I could definitely say it either way. I'm not sure which one I'd say to be honest, I guess I'd take my cue from the parents but might say either. Or either. 😁

blythemum · 23/10/2023 09:54

Blythe is my daughter's name. We pronounce it to rhyme with scythe. We live in the south east, if that has any impact on accents. After you tell people how to pronounce a name once they generally stick to it so I don't think your DD will be plagued by mispronunciations.

Katiesaidthat · 23/10/2023 12:45

I would go for option 2, but that´s just me, seeing the pps above...

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/10/2023 12:52

Option 1

Cotswoldmama · 23/10/2023 12:53

Its the first one

DeadBugMountainClimber · 23/10/2023 12:54

1

Ive never heard it pronounced the other way.

The breathe v breath example doesn't work for me as they both end in the same th sound when I say them 🤷‍♀️

I know how to pronounce Blythe, I just think the explanations people are giving only work in certain accents

Maybe, but every single dictionary I've seen gives the voiced 'th' as the standard British pronunciation for 'breathe', e.g.:

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/pronunciation/english/breathe

I've not seen the voiceless 'th' shown as a regional variation.

I think it is therefore fair to use the word 'breathe' as analogous to 'blythe'.

Fascinating

FayCarew · 23/10/2023 14:29

I've never heard of anyone saying breathe with the 'th' like in thing.

FeverBeam · 23/10/2023 13:37

Yes, I thought so too.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 23/10/2023 14:44

Option 1 is correct, with a voiced 'th' as in 'then', not a non-voiced one as in 'think'. I can't believe how many people didn't understand your options Confused.
