Which of these two girl names do you prefer: Sasha or Cleo?

Hi all, my husband and I have finally come down to two name options for our second daughter who is due in Jan. We have been deliberating and disagreeing forever so it feels like an achievement. Except now I am stumped and so is he. We can't choose out of Sasha and Cleo. Would love to hear your thoughts. Oh, and one other thing: I am English but my husband is half Russian and our daughters have a Russian surname. I would ideally like a first name that doesn't sound too obviously Russian because I want it to nod to both of our ancestries. I'd be keen to hear whether you find Sasha to sound very Russian, or if it could also be western European in your eyes. We also have French in our shared ancestry so not too concerned about the first name sounding very English specifically. Thanks so much for your time.

I prefer Cleo, no particular reason, it just sounds nicer to my ears Smile

lilyblue5 · 17/10/2023 09:38

They are both nice, I prefer Sasha but I only know boy Sacha’s? But might be just where I am from.
Its probably unisex?

KilgoreTrouts · 17/10/2023 09:38

All the Sashas I know are Russian or Russian-descended and male. My son’s music teacher spells his as Saša.

caringcarer · 17/10/2023 09:39

I thought Sasha is a boy's name. My nephew is called Sasha.

Calphurnia · 17/10/2023 09:40

I thought Sasha was short for Alexander in Russian, so male

lilyblue5 · 17/10/2023 09:41

I guess Alex is m/f..

WanderingWitches · 17/10/2023 09:45

Cleo. Sacha is a boys name to me.

JohnThorntonsOverbearingMother · 17/10/2023 09:48

I really like both of them actually. Which isn’t usually the case on these threads.

Sasha is unisex at this point and I’d imagine more commonly used for girls than boys in the UK.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 17/10/2023 09:51

Sacha is my DB’s middle name. We’re not Russian, no ancestry that way but DM read Chekhov and liked Russian names.

I’d do Cleo as first name and Sacha as middle.

For me Sasha is a boys name so I'd go with Cleo

KeepForgetting · 17/10/2023 10:32

I like both. I know a teenage girl called Sasha.

Persiana · 17/10/2023 10:33

They are both gorgeous. I love Sasha for a girl. I think that just wins

Valstarino · 17/10/2023 10:34

I prefer Cleo.

CrasyoDrago · 17/10/2023 10:40

Sasha can be unisex.

The only ones I have every known are girls and not Russian! Had quite a close friend with this name as a child. Also one of the Bratz girl dolls was called Sasha.

I prefer Sasha, it doesn't ring Russian to me (probably because of associations )

KirstenBlest · 17/10/2023 10:51

Sasha. Sasha Swire and Sasha Obama are female, but they are really Alexandra and Natasha on their BC.

Appleorchard123 · 17/10/2023 11:25

I love Cleo - it was high on my list for all of my daughters!

scottishmk · 17/10/2023 11:28

Sacha is a boys name

In London cleo / clio is generslly given to afro caribbean girls/ women. So may presume you're mixed russian/ afro caribbean.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 17/10/2023 11:28

Love Sasha.

Yogagrandmum · 17/10/2023 11:29

Alexandra or Charlotte are best

and that would be a problem?

WineAndFireside · 17/10/2023 11:31

I prefer Cleo. If you want to nod to your French heritage there is a great French film called Cleo de 5 a 7. I've loved the name since I saw that film.

Beamur · 17/10/2023 11:32

Sasha.
I think Cleo is cute but I have had multiple pets with this name, so think of it more as a cat/dog name! Plus people often get it wrong and think you have said Chloe for some reason.

Sandysandwich · 17/10/2023 11:38

Cleo is a great name
Sasha just makes me think of the Bratz doll as she is the one I has as a kid

Not in my experience - then I work with a wide range of people - and Sasha is unisex.

KirstenBlest · 17/10/2023 11:48

I thought Cleo/Clio was greek. The male Sashas I know are Sacha or Sascha.
Darkgreener says many more girl Sashas than boy Sashas
