Thoughts on the name Maria? Ty

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Really like it. I have an Aunt Mim. I do like Maria and Marianne.

Beachywave · 19/10/2023 19:31

It's a nice name - assume you're African Muslim. I know quite a few Miriam/ Mariams.

SirVixofVixHall · 19/10/2023 19:32

I love it, beautiful name.

WanderingWitches · 19/10/2023 19:35

Great name! Never met one but it's really nice

It’s really nice! It’s quite a Jewish / Hebrew name so just might be a bit odd if you don’t have that heritage.

Hannah and Sarah are Hebrew too. It isn't odd to use names of Hebrew origin.

Miriam is beautiful

KirstenBlest · 19/10/2023 19:45

as are Leah, Susannah, Elizabeth, Ruth, Naomi, Martha, Rachel, Rebecca etc

FunCatSunPat · 19/10/2023 19:50

I love it. It was on my wishlist for DD but DH vetoed as he thought it was an "old lady name"! 🙄

LlynTegid · 19/10/2023 19:53

Some names should only be for one person, let it just be Miriam Margolyes. Same as there should only ever be one Kylie, for example.

😂 but Kylie was already a really popular name in Australia- it was the 5th most popular baby name there in 1970 when Kylie Minogue was 2 years old. So there's loads of women in their 50s named Kylie.
Equally Miriam is the number 1 baby name in Israel so again there are already loads of girls out there with the name.

LoreleiG · 19/10/2023 20:01

My DM would call it ‘a bit Old Testament’. It’s sweet as a standalone name though.

GotMooMilk · 19/10/2023 20:02

I know 3 Miriam’s they’re all Muslim women and all lovely. I love the name!

That’s interesting as the Mariams I know are muslim but the Miriams I know are Jewish.

Lovely name Op :)

Wishingwell57 · 19/10/2023 20:06

I like Miriam (I know one with the spelling 'Myriam' and also a fan of Marianne and Marian.

CurlewKate · 19/10/2023 20:07

I have a family member called Miriam shortened to Miro. I think it's lovely..

Lookingatthesunset · 19/10/2023 20:09

I love it. I love Biblical names anyway.

I've only ever met two Miriams. One was white English and the other white Irish.

My sprogs have Rachel, Ruth and David as 2nd names.

MatildaonMain · 19/10/2023 22:22

I love Miriam. It has such a pretty sound and isn’t heard too often.

LilyLemonade · 19/10/2023 23:37

Love it.

Findyourneutralspace · 19/10/2023 23:40

I knew a Miriam at university. She went by Mimi or Mim.

SoundTheSirens · 19/10/2023 23:40

It’s grown on me. It’s pretty, it’s recognisable as a name without being ubiquitous and it has some nice shortenings.

Izzy24 · 19/10/2023 23:40

Like Miriam, like Mariam more.

SkaneTos · 19/10/2023 23:42

Miriam is a lovely name! I know two women named Miriam, and they are both wonderful people.

squishee · 19/10/2023 23:49

I love all variations of it - Miriam, Myriam, Mariam, Meriem, Meryem...

LylaLee · 19/10/2023 23:50

sunshinesupermum · 16/10/2023 15:56

Miriam is a Hebrew not Muslim name garlictwist

Why make assertions about things you clearly know nothing about?

Mary is the only woman named in the Koran. Many Muslim women are named after her. The Koran is in Arabic. Arabic is notoriously difficult to transcribe to western script (Remember Khadaffi/Ghadaffi/Gaddafi/Qaddafi. Other variations on the former leader of Libya include "Gathafi," "Kadafi," and "Gadafy)

So depending on which country you are from Miriam become Mariam/Maryam

steppemum · 19/10/2023 23:51

I love it, by dd is a Miriam.

I have taught a few but they tend to be Mariam or Maryam (and pronounced either with an a or the same as Miriam)

In Christian circles you come across it regularly but it isn't overused.

sunshinesupermum · 20/10/2023 00:01

LylaLee You are the one who knows nothing. Miriam is of Hebrew origin and predates Mary. The Old and New Testament both predate the Koran by hundreds of years. HTH.
