Is this a horrible spelling?

I've loved the name Madilyn for years, but my best friend keeps telling me that it's terrible. Is it? I personally find it cute and the pronunciation is clear.

I don't hate Madeline or Madeleine, but I feel like the pronunciation is not so clear and that Madeleine will get associated with the sad case of the little girl, as I also realised how much the name had fallen in popularity since the events.

Madelyn looks really bad to me somehow (sorry, I don't mean it in a bad way, I just dislike the way the "made" sticks out so much in this one).

So is Madilyn fine or should we go with another name entirely?

I’m not a fan of the spelling.

AliOlis · 24/09/2023 21:48

It's awful.

Goodornot · 24/09/2023 21:50

You're a fan of Madilyn Bailey?

Changingplace · 24/09/2023 21:51

I’ve never seen that spelling, I’m not a fan sorry.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/09/2023 21:51

Madeleine will get associated with the sad case of the little girl

That's just ridiculous. Thousands upon thousands of females have this name.

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 24/09/2023 21:51

Personally I think go for a standard spelling. I think it would be irritating to always be correcting people on how to spell my name, for my whole life.

MaudGonneOutForAFag · 24/09/2023 21:52

Ghastly.

BoleynMemories13 · 24/09/2023 21:52

Personally I'm not a fan of messing with traditional spellings. You'll set her up for a lifetime of having to spell out her name, and risk looking like you can't spell on the process.

Madeleine is lovely. As for McCann, when said aloud you always risk that association with this name now (sadly), however you spell it. So you may as well go traditional imo.

Feliciacat · 24/09/2023 21:53

I know someone called Madelynn and it’s a great name. She never has people getting it confused with Madeleine. The one thing I’d say is that Madelynn/Madilyn is quite American so you might get people assuming you are connected with America (my friend is Canadian and lives in America). If you would mind that then maybe Madilyn isn’t so good but that’s the only ‘criticism’ I can think of.

I don’t mind Americanised names, I’m just saying that thinking of names from every angle is important before naming someone a band for their whole life 🤷🏻‍♀️ You clearly know this based on how you’re posting for advice about the name though. I think you’ve thought hard and if you like Madilyn then you should go for it!

TeaKitten · 24/09/2023 21:53

Spell it properly or use a different name. What you think is ‘cute’ now shouldn’t be the decision maker, this is a person who will spend their life correcting your cutsie spelling and being pissed off about it.

NuffSaidSam · 24/09/2023 21:53

I'd generally try and use the most common spelling as that will be easiest for your child.

Also, the connection with Madeleine McCann is in the pronunciation not the spelling. No-one is going to know how you spell it when you introduce her, they'll just hear the name.

Totalwasteofpaper · 24/09/2023 21:53

Honestly... i'd assume you were semi-illiterate and didn't know how to spell the name properly.

its awful.

Freezingcoldinseptember · 24/09/2023 21:53

Imo That Madeleine should never be forgotten...
Please don't give your dc a made up name...

Feliciacat · 24/09/2023 21:54

Madelynn is a name in itself rather than a non-traditional spelling of Madeleine :)

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2023 21:54

Yep, awful. I'd think you didn't know how to spell properly.

TemporarilyshyAF · 24/09/2023 21:58

I don't really care for non traditional spellings, harder for people to spell and pronounce. Just don't see the point. I think you're fine regarding the McCann association. It's a well used enough name.

Butterkist8 · 24/09/2023 21:58

You're trying too hard to be unique. It looks a bit silly.

CapEBarra · 24/09/2023 21:58

It looks like Mad Lyn.

Spell it properly or use a different name. What you think is ‘cute’ now shouldn’t be the decision maker, this is a person who will spend their life correcting your cutsie spelling and being pissed off about it.

When it comes to names, cute / sweet is bad unless you’re naming an animal who won’t be bothered.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/09/2023 22:03

Don’t do it. Your child will have her name spelt incorrectly her whole life.

MajesticWhine · 24/09/2023 22:04

No it's not ok.

benoticanarsed · 24/09/2023 22:05

One off dds friends is Evie. Spelt eeviee. They have just started y7 and it's pronounced about 4 different ways.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/09/2023 22:08

Marilyn

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 24/09/2023 22:09

I meant, Marilyn as a possibility?

chocciecake · 24/09/2023 22:09

I'm not a fan of that hybrid name
