Is this a horrible spelling?

I've loved the name Madilyn for years, but my best friend keeps telling me that it's terrible. Is it? I personally find it cute and the pronunciation is clear.

I don't hate Madeline or Madeleine, but I feel like the pronunciation is not so clear and that Madeleine will get associated with the sad case of the little girl, as I also realised how much the name had fallen in popularity since the events.

Madelyn looks really bad to me somehow (sorry, I don't mean it in a bad way, I just dislike the way the "made" sticks out so much in this one).

So is Madilyn fine or should we go with another name entirely?

It looks like a typo for Marilyn to me. I love Marilyn!

The McCann link wouldn't bother me, I know plenty of Madeleines and never think McCann.

DinaofCloud9 · 24/09/2023 22:54

I'd think you didn't know how to spell it. I know a few Madeleines all born after the Mccann case so it's still a used name.

theduchessofspork · 24/09/2023 22:55

Just go with Madeline (Anglicised) or Madeleine (original French).

It’s a normal name, everyone knows how to say it, a younique spelling makes you and your child look idiotic

SkiingIsHeaven · 24/09/2023 23:13

If you have to ask, you already know it not good. Sorry.

Nanny0gg · 24/09/2023 23:16

I personally hate made-up names which is what that looks like.

It's pretty unanimous but I have a feeling you won't care

TheMurderousGoose · 24/09/2023 23:16

It reminds me of this meme

Is this a horrible spelling?
Spirallingdownwards · 24/09/2023 23:22

Don't do it

Fireisland · 24/09/2023 23:23

American trailer trash spelling.

jellytots18 · 24/09/2023 23:25

I prefer the traditional spelling, however i think your best friend is being rude xx

Littlefish · 24/09/2023 23:35

Absolutely horrible made-up spelling.

sanityisamyth · 24/09/2023 23:38

It's awful. She'll have a lifetime of spelling her name out for everything. It'll get misspelled all the time.

One off dds friends is Evie. Spelt eeviee. They have just started y7 and it's pronounced about 4 different ways.

Wonder how long it will be before friend decides to spell it Evie.

Eeviee looks as if the e on the keyboard got stuck.

(Isn’t Eeviee a Pokémon?)

Peaceandquietfinally · 24/09/2023 23:44

A beautiful name and use the right spelling!

friendlycat · 24/09/2023 23:45

If you have to ask, you already know it not good. Sorry.

Sums it up.

CallieQ · 24/09/2023 23:48

Agree it's awful

Just spell it properly

Caffeinequeen91 · 24/09/2023 23:50

Just use the standard spelling….

larkstar · 24/09/2023 23:53

It's just unnecessary - what is the point you want to make? In the scheme of things there are and will be many more issues that will or should weigh on your mind far more than the spelling - in a few years you will probably shrink with embarrassment at the time and energy invested in the issue. Keep it simple: contrived spellings don't impress anyone.

DinnaeFashYersel · 25/09/2023 00:00

I hate weird spelling

dragonmama13 · 25/09/2023 00:10

Yes, looks bad.

caringcarer · 25/09/2023 00:12

Spell it properly children with weird spellings get a hard time

SammyScrounge · 25/09/2023 00:21

Madilyn is pretty awful. Have you considered that as your little girl goes through life, she's going to spend half her time correcting people's spelling of her name? Or publicly having to spell it out? Much kinder to give her a name with a standard spelling.

Marcipex · 25/09/2023 00:26

I like it, it’s pretty.
It’s no different imo to all the spellings of Catherine, Katharine, Kathryn etc or Alastair, Alistair, or Elliott, Elliot, Eliot.

atthebottomofthehill · 25/09/2023 00:34

Chavtastic sozzz

Ladylalaboo1 · 25/09/2023 01:05

My name is Madeline, pronounced Madelin ( silent e) I do often have to correct people as they assume it's Madeline as in line , but I don't mind. I do mind when people automatically call me maddie or Maddy, really dislike that for me and I go by mads mostly! But I think I'd hate if it was spelt 'madelynn' or a different variation. Also I'm in my 30's and can probably count on one hand the amount of times people have ever said anything about madeleine McCann to me. Obviously they might think it but they probably don't as much as you think they would ! It's your child though , I'd never change an idea about a child's name I had based on others opinions, if you and partner like it then go for it !

Madelynn is genuinely a name that is different to Madeleine. Does nobody know this? It seems not from this thread.

I'm not the OP with a different account; I just have a friend called Madelynn. It’s said ‘mad-a-lin’ rather than ‘mad-e-line’. She’s never had an issue with being called Madelynn. It’s rather an American name which is probably why nobody knows it. It’s definitely a name and not a misspelling!

Madeleine isn't pronounced Mad-a-line. It's pronounced Mad-a-lyn Confused

Whether the middle syllable sounds more like ah or eh is down to your own accent.
