Is this a horrible spelling?

I've loved the name Madilyn for years, but my best friend keeps telling me that it's terrible. Is it? I personally find it cute and the pronunciation is clear.

I don't hate Madeline or Madeleine, but I feel like the pronunciation is not so clear and that Madeleine will get associated with the sad case of the little girl, as I also realised how much the name had fallen in popularity since the events.

Madelyn looks really bad to me somehow (sorry, I don't mean it in a bad way, I just dislike the way the "made" sticks out so much in this one).

So is Madilyn fine or should we go with another name entirely?

One off dds friends is Evie. Spelt eeviee. They have just started y7 and it's pronounced about 4 different ways.

Wonder how long it will be before friend decides to spell it Evie.

Eeviee looks as if the e on the keyboard got stuck.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 24/09/2023 22:12

I think spell it properly or use a different name. I don't understand your comments about it being clear pronunciation or avoiding the connection with Madeleine McCann. It's the same name. Pronounced the same. But with a made-up spelling.

Oh my goodness. Poor kid.

And OP, just spell it right or choose a different name.

benoticanarsed · 24/09/2023 22:14

Looking back on the spelling eeviee I'm
curious how the teachers have pronounced it though.

KnickerlessParsons · 24/09/2023 22:14

Madeleine will get associated with the sad case of the little girl

People of your daughter's generation will never have heard of Madeline McCann

Feliciacat · 24/09/2023 22:16

Madelynn is genuinely a name that is different to Madeleine. Does nobody know this? It seems not from this thread.

I'm not the OP with a different account; I just have a friend called Madelynn. It’s said ‘mad-a-lin’ rather than ‘mad-e-line’. She’s never had an issue with being called Madelynn. It’s rather an American name which is probably why nobody knows it. It’s definitely a name and not a misspelling!

I don't think that's true, she will always be remembered and known.

The spelling you're suggesting is awful OP, sorry.

bellarosabella · 24/09/2023 22:17

Wouldn't she always have to spell it out as Madeline, Madeleine and Madelyn are all popular?

I know some Madelines who pronounce it -line to rhyme with wine or fine so that is what I meant by the pronunciation not being clear.

I don't want to be unique, I love this spelling, I can't help it.

I agree that the case shouldn't be forgotten and that it sounds the same, but at least on paper it will be different. Maybe I'm overthinking this, but it dropped significantly since the case so I guess many people have that association.

It also somehow bothers me that Madeleine has a different pronunciation in French so pronouncing it in English feels wrong to me, but maybe I'm overthinking this too. I know a French Madeleine and it's more like mahd-LENN than mad-eh-linn.

Hideous, sorry.

It takes alot to say that about a name.

Professionalmess · 24/09/2023 22:19

As someone who's spent over 30 years having to tell others the non-traditional spelling of her name, don't do it.

It doesn't work for me, because I see "made Lynn". I'm sure it's lovely on your friend, though!

I personally do believe it's a variant of Madeline, though. At least that's what I found when I googled it.

Horrible spelling of a lovely name.

Just use the actual spelling.

Madeleine

PrincessHoneysuckle · 24/09/2023 22:21

She'll be a Maddie at school people always shorten names like that

Alstroemeria123 · 24/09/2023 22:21

I think it’s fine. Madeleine is one of those names (like Catherine) that people are going to have to spell out anyway as there are so many variants, so having a slightly unusual spelling isn’t going to matter so much.

Poorlymumma · 24/09/2023 22:22

Sorry but I think with that spelling her name will be constantly misspelled and she'd spend her life correcting people/spelling it out loud for people.
It also doesn't really change the connection to maddie mccann, if people hear the name madeleine and think of her spelling it differently won't really change that.

RichPetunia · 24/09/2023 22:23

I think it's very nice 👍

Babyroobs · 24/09/2023 22:23

It's not good. I have a friend called Martyn and that just isn't right either.

viques · 24/09/2023 22:24

It looks as though you knew what name you wanted but were too dim to spell it properly. It’s a bit like calling your child Elizabeff.

Cropcycle · 24/09/2023 22:25

If it’s the association with Madeleine McCann I’d not let that stop you using the usual spellings, in case that makes people think of her. She was a lovely little girl, with a lovely name. Yes, something tragic happened to her but lots of really tragic things have happened to people all through history and mostly we use the names. Some are so tarnished ie Adolf, that no one goes there, quite understandably , but if you love the name, I’d go for one of the usual spellings. Madelynn just looks very strange imo.

BrightLightTonight · 24/09/2023 22:26

The spelling is horrible. Madeline is a beautiful name

Daffyyellow · 24/09/2023 22:27

Yes, it’s pretty awful. You’re giving her a life time of correcting the spelling of her name.

margegunderson · 24/09/2023 22:30

You and your daughter are going to spend your lives saying "Madilyn, spelt...."
Why do it? It doesn't look good and it's just perverse.

FlipFlopVibe · 24/09/2023 22:30

Don't really think it's as terrible as people are making out. I've seen an awful lot worse than that

AngelinaFibres · 24/09/2023 22:33

NuffSaidSam · 24/09/2023 21:53

I'd generally try and use the most common spelling as that will be easiest for your child.

Also, the connection with Madeleine McCann is in the pronunciation not the spelling. No-one is going to know how you spell it when you introduce her, they'll just hear the name.

This. Her father had a Scottish accent. I can't see or hear the name without hearing it as he said it. Thats just me.I am much older than you so probably watched more of the coverage than you did.

AngelinaFibres · 24/09/2023 22:35

Babyroobs · 24/09/2023 22:23

It's not good. I have a friend called Martyn and that just isn't right either.

Presumably he introduces himself as " That's Martyn with a y not an i" everytime he is asked for his name
