What are your thoughts on the name Thor?

We have Danish heritage and seem to produce blonde, broad and tall boys. My partner absolutely adores this name...

No.

Way too much baggage and expectation.

It’s the sort of name that sounds great when you are pregnant but is absolutely terrible for an actual child to go through life with. Also, a complete gift to bullies if he is not Thor like in physicality or temperament.

I had a ‘yoonique’ name for my son when pregnant. I am so glad I did not burden him with it. It is so not the child he turned out to be and would have made his life harder.

Crazykefir · 08/09/2023 13:18

Please don't

piglet81 · 08/09/2023 13:19

Big shoes (helmet?) to fill. It seems a bit of a burden tbh!

NotFastButFurious · 08/09/2023 13:20

I agree with the PP, it's too big a name to burden a baby with. It's one of those names which really needs to suit you to be able to pull it off.

Reminds me of the rhyme that ends

I’m Thor! ‘ he cried.
His horse replied
‘You forgot your thaddle, thilly’

Cant remember the beginning.

MrsSiriusBlack1 · 08/09/2023 13:22

Poor kid

TomatoSandwiches · 08/09/2023 13:22

Absolutely not.

AwkwardPaws27 · 08/09/2023 13:24

I like it. DH was keen on Thorin too (although we ended up going with Magnus).

This for me - it's an incredibly hard name to pronounce with a lisp.
Surely there must be other lovely Danish names without quite such a level of God like associations?

SkaneTos · 08/09/2023 13:24

I like the name Thor!

I'm from a Scandinavian country, and the name Thor (more often spelled Tor here) is not super common in my country, but I do know a few men with that name and they are all very nice.
In the older generation the names Tore and Ture are quite common, they are variants of Tor.

Merrow · 08/09/2023 13:25

I've met one. Honestly, it felt a little ridiculous attached to a 6 year old because all I could think of was the marvel character.

Thewizardbinbag · 08/09/2023 13:25

There are plenty of Scandinavian names to choose from with a similar feel to them. Do not call your kid Thor.
There are a few around but they are mostly living and growing up in Scandinavian counties. It would just be stupid here.

Anni1234 · 08/09/2023 13:27

I love it but my DH is too much of a marvel fan!
im not into marvel so it wasn’t about that for me, but I am the one who tend to like some more of the unique names here, and DH will give reasons against which are fair enough. He probably thinks more rationally and logically than me.
he is against Thor and I understand his reasons.
especially when the other kids tell us they want pet turtles called Loki & Thor…
we only ever go for names that we both agree on and get there eventually lol.

TLDRfuckers · 08/09/2023 13:28

Grin this has to be a wind-up!

CattingAbout · 08/09/2023 13:30

its a no from me. I know a 5 year-old Loki - can't say I'm a fan of that either (though I'd never say that to the parents!)

kistanbul · 08/09/2023 13:30

I’m afraid I’d wonder whether you were a white suprematist.
There’s a whole subculture where they are on Norse names.

Totalwasteofpaper · 08/09/2023 13:32

Ridiculous

Please do not do it.
Maybe Thorsten if you are desperate to go down that route

TarquinOliverNimrod · 08/09/2023 13:33

Thor

😂🤣

Floyd45 · 08/09/2023 13:34

I have a friend with a dog named Thor...it is a large golden retriever and very cute. Maybe not for a baby...

fearfuloffluff · 08/09/2023 13:35

Nope. Fine for a confident child in a liberal social circle. Not so good if your child turns out to be timid and needs to mix with a wide range of people.

Supercat100 · 08/09/2023 13:37

Brilliant! On a more serious note, please don't.

UseOfWeapons · 08/09/2023 13:54

Great name, but not for your boy. Despite the heritage, it's not fair on him.

IlonaRN · 08/09/2023 14:04

There are lots of other Danish names that are even better 🙂
(There are lists of names approved in DK - have a look through those and find something else!)

Oreosareawful · 08/09/2023 14:05

Jesus wept no

peaceinourtime · 08/09/2023 14:18

Go for a name like Leif, Soren or Mads if you want to honour it.
