What are your thoughts on the name Thor?

We have Danish heritage and seem to produce blonde, broad and tall boys. My partner absolutely adores this name...

I know 2 Thors, a couple of Thorsten and a Toruń. The two Thors (one Norwegian, one born on a Thursday in a thunderstorm) I have known since we were all children. I’ve never heard any of them being teased about their names and have never seen anyone raise an eyebrow. It’s a good, strong name. Use it if you like it.

We have a 10 year old called Thor, he's our 2nd of 4. And to everyone that knows him.... It's just his name. No expectation, no big shoes to fill etc.
He is just Thor.

Calliopespa · 07/08/2025 00:43

These threads just get sillier.

And unless there's a huge age gap. how do you know you produce these big, broad men?

In any case, I'm not sure what would be more comical: Thor on someone small or a great big comic-book Thor.

Magnus has that problem and I'm yet to meet a boy it suited.

Calliopespa · 07/08/2025 01:34

Also op, it could backfire - literally. Imagine if he suffers from chronic flatulence and is called Thor.

I'm afraid that's what God of Thunder makes me think of.

clarepetal · 07/08/2025 09:23

I love it!!

JaninaDuszejko · 07/08/2025 12:41

Magnus is a very common name in the north of Scotland and, as a PP said, it's just a name. Do you assume every Henry you meet will grow up to have 6 wives? It's as ridiculous a conclusion.

RuthW · 07/08/2025 12:52

Just no!

That's not quite the same though, is it.

Henry doesn't MEAN "I have six wives". It's just that someone called Henry did have six wives.

Plenty of people feel the same about the name Bella: it doesn't sit well if the person isn't physically beautiful.

Cocktailsandcheese · 07/08/2025 15:45

I know a Thor. When I first heard it I did think it was a bit ridiculous, but I've just got used to it now and it's just his name, no associations with anything else.

You're culturally clueless. It's a very common name in Scandinavian countries.

PadraigV · 10/08/2025 23:57

Thats amazing 🤩 Our Thor is 10, never been an issue, ever.

namethoughts · 11/08/2025 00:01

@LoveMyLifeAlways@PadraigV ❤️

So glad we did it. We’ve had many compliments and even when our little one was in hospital at 6 weeks with meningitis, the cleaner knocked and wanted to chat about his name. That will stay with us forever 😘

Not clueless at all and frankly I’m a foreigner living in another country so am probably more aware of cultural differences than you. It may be a popular name in Scandinavia (yeah I have family who live there so I know) but it isn’t in the UK. You’re culturally naive to think these things don’t matter .

Hey you’re welcome from one foreigner to another.

EveSix · 11/08/2025 01:03

Nice that you went with a proper Scandi spelling (and pronunciation, presumably). Genuinely baffled that posters on a UK based forum got so worked up about using the name of a Norse deity -don't see the problem, it's not as if you were calling him Jesus. Tor is a great name and the ones I know, young and old, are solid, good men.

its a no from me. I know a 5 year-old Loki - can't say I'm a fan of that either (though I'd never say that to the parents!)

I've known little Lokis and a little Odin.

Doesn't appeal to me personally, I'm originally from a Nordic country, but names like Thor are too associated with Marvel these days.

Tintackedsea · 11/08/2025 09:16

I know a Thorsten nn Tor.
