My husband hates every name!!

Dh is driving me loopy with his lack of flexibility on names. We are expecting a boy in two weeks and we still don’t even have any names we both like. Names we have are as follows:
Ollie (ambivalent but we don’t like it)
Jordan (I hate but dh likes)
Every name I suggest dh hates, the only name he’s come up with is Jordan. Dh likes gender neutral names which I don’t mind but I want something masculine sounding.

Rowan, Rory or Alex?

Barleysugar86 · 18/08/2023 20:36

Could you explore more J names- Jason, Jesse, Jacob, Joseph, see if he has any interest?

TheBrightestStarInTheSky · 18/08/2023 20:38

Jamie
Nathan
Brad
Joshua
Jacob

NooNaNa · 18/08/2023 20:39

Do you like Jordan?

Oli is ok, but there are quite a few.

Compromising on names is tough. My children would have had very different names if my husband had left it to me.

The thing that I found most annoying is that DH would only say no to my suggestions, but never come up with anything himself:

Seryse · 18/08/2023 20:39

Sometimes you lay eyes on the bubs and you get a wee "OHH!" moment where a name just comes to you (my 14 years on labour ward, I've seen this a looooooot, also laughed at a lot of couples still name arguing during labour 🤣). I'm quite lucky, my OH was pretty chill with names and we clicked very quickly on our 2 within a day of knowing what they were.

I like Joe (Joey when they see running about wild as toddlers is the cutest thing), has a lot of scope for variations as he gets older if you like nicknames etc, maybe put that to hubby or is he deadset against that one?

Oldermum84 · 18/08/2023 20:42

Don't panic! You don't have to decide until you register him a few weeks after birth. Maybe waiting to meet him will help.

ImNotAMermaid · 18/08/2023 20:57

@NooNaNa I don’t like Jordan as it’s the name of a shoe and I want to send him to private school.
@Seryse he’s dead against it as ‘it’s too plain’
@MerryChristmasToYou we both like Rowan but it’s the name of my nephew!!

Hi @ImNotAMermaid
My husband was the same, he didn't agree on any name. When i did find a name, he was more happy about the meaning of the name than the actual name lol and was happy to go with it!
You could try looking up the meaning of a name you like hopefully this will convince your husband like it did mine! Xx

ImNotAMermaid · 18/08/2023 21:14

Dh has also suggested Obelisk nn ‘Obie’ but I think it sounds ridiculous!! I don’t want to name my baby after a comic character or a stone monument!!

At this point I’m convinced the only names dh likes are of fictional characters or sportsmen! It feels like we’ll never get anywhere!!

Is it worth trying to go with it and finding either a fictional character or sportsman name that you are happy with?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/08/2023 21:22

Isn't there an app where you both tap names you like (separately) then the app pulls them into a list, of only the names you both "liked"?

Frankly if the baby is getting dhs surname, abd you've been the one to carry and deliver him, then I'd say you get the say, provided its not one dh actually hates.

Juggernaut was my genuine reaction to the suggestion Obelisk as well pp. He’s just told me he likes Jacob (I do too) however we can’t use it as it’s a close relatives name!
