Aydin?

would your mind go straight to oh they’ve jumped on a trend bandwagon and got kreative with the spelling? Like nevaeh or heavenleigh?

No, I’ve heard it numerous times before. It’s awful.

oldnorsesaga · 18/08/2023 15:45

I would assume it's Muslim name or some Celtic name spelled English way. I'm not British, nor American

Why is it awful?

Isn’t it just Aidan?

Shelaydownunderthetable · 18/08/2023 15:47

Im getting a Lord of the Rings vibe from it

Optionyougot · 18/08/2023 15:48

For Aydin, no. I spent a few months working across Greece and Turkey and came across a few Aydins.

Plexie · 18/08/2023 15:48

No, I would think they might be Turkish as I used to work with a guy called Aydin who was of Turkish origin.

I've just Googled and it's also the name of a city in Turkey (or should that be Turkiye...) so it's not unique at all.

amylou8 · 18/08/2023 15:48

Sounds like how people from round here would say Hayden.

HaveImadeabooboo · 18/08/2023 15:48

No it’s Aydin but pretty much pronounced the same

TheOGCCL · 18/08/2023 15:49

I read it as Turkish and/ or Muslim and feels like appropriation if you're neither

Toottooot · 18/08/2023 15:49

HaveImadeabooboo · 18/08/2023 15:45

Why is it awful?

Its awful as it comes across too try hard by parents thinking they have a yoonique spelling of Aiden.

That’s true! Although it’s pronounced differently that’s pronounced like eye-din (awful phonics on my part) where as this is more like Aiden

I like it. Are you Turkish?

My colleague's name was pronounced eye-den, not aid-en.

Yeah it’s a Turkish and Arabic name (not sure if there are Arab Christians or Jews with it, perhaps, but it’s definitely a Muslim name)

OP posts:
YukoandHiro · 18/08/2023 15:51

I wouldn't see it as pronounced the same as Aiden.

I'd think it was "eye-a-din"

HaveImadeabooboo · 18/08/2023 15:52

Gnomegnomegnome · 18/08/2023 15:50

I like it. Are you Turkish?

no I’m not Turkish but dh is Muslim

If it reflects your heritage, go for it

But as these threads always show, there are a lot of people who can't tell the difference between a name from another culture and a youneek one

BadlydoneHelen · 18/08/2023 15:53

From Googling it's a place in Turkey so not sure if it's a traditional name in Turkey. To UK ears it sounds like Aidan with a SE/estuary accent

BadlydoneHelen · 18/08/2023 15:54

Hayden I should have said

And that’s what really worries me, as much as it shouldn’t names can hinder you in life and when we’ve said the name we get a lot of oh how interesting with raised eyebrows or people choking over how to pronounce it

Totally normal name round here (London).

Whatsthepoint1234 · 18/08/2023 15:55

I’d assume your dc was Turkish or had a Turkish or had Turkish parents. If you aren’t Turkish/Greek/Middle Eastern I’d go with the Aidan spelling. Even if it’s pronounced slightly differently British people will called your son Aidan anyway (from experience of having a ‘foreign’ name that looks like a British one).
