Artemis

What’s the Mumsnet view on Artemis? I love it, but it was met with an instant dismissal from my husband. Does the NASA Artemis project change your view on the name?

I'm love it. Classically as Goddess of the hunt, of the wilderness etc she was a kick ass: Tough and brave.

It's OK, not as nice as Diana or Artemisia. What would put me off is a fictional character called Artemis Fowl, who appears to be a boy. I don't know whether the books are still popular, but if so it sounds like school bullies are more likely to be familiar with it and its inappropriately named male protagonist than with classical mythology. It's a judgement call I guess.

Have only ever met one - she would be in her mid 20s now. It's not a name I'd choose personally but it grew on me as I got used to it.

Would t do artemisia though as the common name for the plant is wormwood (it is quite pretty but poisonous)

@MotherOfCrocodiles , it's been used medicinally in the past to get rid of worms, I think.

Fair enough about wormwood, although poisonous associations haven't put people off Ivy :)

I don't like Ivy, it makes me think Ivy Tilsley, Poison Ivy, the clingy persistent weed...

It sounds like the name of a consortium.

I really like it. Strong and not frilly.

I don't really like the sound. For the same sentiment, I prefer Diana.

I don't actively dislike it though or attach any connotations than the Greek godess.

We loved it, but couldn't see how it would be shortened so have used it as a middle name.

I do really like it, but can you really imagine shouting it across the soft play? May be better for a middle name as I love the meaning. Athena could be an alternative if you like goddess names.

I've taught a girl called Artemis and she was often having her name accidentally mispronounced as Armetis. Not by me I hasten to add! Perhaps because people were so unfamiliar with it.

I love it and we almost called DD this. We didn't as for me it's just too full on serious goddess. As did Athena. Felt a bit sacrilegious, to be honest! We discarded several Greek goddesses' names for that reason.

I like it a lot but I think it’s too bold for me to consider using. Would be a great middle name. I think the space connection is quite cool.

Too much for me. Sounds pompous to my ear and also kind of like a pharmaceutical company

@MotherOfCrocodiles , the common name wormwood is from its use.
Wormwood Scrubs would sound nicer if it was Artemisia Shrubland or something.
