I want to call my baby Ianto after him in Torchwood: why is everyone on my case about it??

I am having a boy in a month or so's time. I really like Torchwood and I want to call my boy Ianto (pronounced Yanto) after that lovely guy in Torchwood. In fact the plan is to call him Ianto Owen Tosh (and surname). Whats wrong with this? DP is being very funny with me over it and I am really starting to get the hump. They are all proper names! I am not calling him after a football team, or Ikea or Nintendo or anything!

My parents aren't speaking to me over this. And my sister says I am losing it and should not be naming my child after people in weird cult spin-offs in which people constantly have sex with anything which happens along, male, female or alien especially when it has nothing much to do with the plot. Which is really HER going off on one in typical style!

They are just names. And I LOVE them, as I love the characters.

Please give me some feedback. I am on my sister's PC so probably won't be back to thread until later this evening but it people could give me constructive feedback in the meantime I would be most grateful.

not really, i've seen the eps in advance, it's nothing in the scheme of things i can assure you.

AuntyMable · 22/02/2008 11:55

Wasn't it funny seeing Owen all frumpy and insecure in the Adam episode?

His attractivenss - not that he floats my boat personally - is all in his confidence, clearly!

God lol yes... that cardigan did him no favours did it...

DEFINITELY his confidence and cynical sense of humour, imo.

Chuffinnora · 22/02/2008 11:59

Grrr read most of the thread - got nicely uppity about Ianto being a perfectly nice, easy to spell and pronounce welsh name and found out it was a joke.

I'm all revved up with no where to go now!

AuntyMable · 22/02/2008 12:02

You can vent at me for winding you up Chuff, I don't mind, I deserve it

"Ianto" is not that diffucult surely though... it's basically IAN with TO on the when you say Ian fast it can sound like YAN. It's not phonetically non-sensible like Siobhan for instance

Auntie Mabel - My brother is Ian and my Dad used to call him Ianto Full Pelt because was always rushing about.

Very good wind up though.

AuntyMable · 22/02/2008 12:12

[muses] I might ask DH to have his vasectomy reversed so we can have another boy and call him Ianto...

[not chuffin likely!!!)

(Re another baby, not the name!)

We may get a dog some time in the near furture. If a boy we may call HIM Ianto..

Surely Pippin would be better

AuntyMable · 22/02/2008 12:15

I was just sitting here thinking why Pippin??! I don't want a terrier type at all..!

DUH!!!

I swear I have identity issues.. I never know who I'm posting as.. recipe for disaster!

Ianto's a fab name Torchwood or no Torchwood - it's your bloomin' decision... BUT, it is also your dh's decision - you can only g with something he's happy with - forget everyone else.
I bet loads of people went for Luke after Star Wars and there was no outcry about that because Luke's a much more common name.

rebelmum1 · 22/02/2008 16:23

Your watching too much TV, you need to name him after someone in a classic like Yury or Heathcliffe

rebelmum1 · 22/02/2008 16:24

You shouldn't have told them it was from Torchood..

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 22/02/2008 17:22

Twas a joke I believe, Rebelmum

RubberDuck · 22/02/2008 19:47

FINALLY got around to watching the episode.

pixiereb · 22/02/2008 21:21

good laff, thanks aunty mable! , especially liked the 'Captain Jack' bit.

Other 'brilliant' names dh and I have giggled over:
Caspian
Caractacus
Isembard
Optimus

MsHighwater · 24/02/2008 20:51

Tosh is actually a perfectly normal surname so I'd let you have that (tho it would be usual to have a connection to the name in that case) as the lesser of 2 evils.

Ianto - I'm with your sister.

Don't put "Captain Jack" anywhere in there, fgs.

It is (presumably) your DP's child too. Don't insist on a silly name that he doesn't like. Find something you can both like (preferably something less pop culture influence, imho).

scottishmummy · 24/02/2008 21:03

Mable - congratulations on your pg.hope all goes well.

imo do differentiate from tv and real life eg what sounds acceptable on your fave telly programme does not necessarily sound good shouted in park "Ianto come in yer tea's ready"

besides you will constantly be emphasising how to say it, practise saying "actually its pronounced Yanto!"

scottishmummy · 24/02/2008 21:35

gosh!what fun that must bedo you note inconsistencies/errors/use of non Dr Who names?why not just ponder whether this is a wind up

youknowyouknow · 24/02/2008 21:41

I LOVE Ianto...one of my good friends has this name (in his 40s) and has never had any problems...if I was welsh and Torchwood hadn't happened then my new one would have this name so there...

MsHighwater · 24/02/2008 22:09

Glad to have provided you with some amusement, Rubber Duck.

MrsJohnCusack · 24/02/2008 22:29

isn't Ianto just a welsh name?

MadamePlatypus · 24/02/2008 22:34

"I never know who I'm posting as"

Hmmm [hmmm]

anyway, I like Ianto.

MadamePlatypus · 24/02/2008 22:35
