I want to call my baby Ianto after him in Torchwood: why is everyone on my case about it??

I am having a boy in a month or so's time. I really like Torchwood and I want to call my boy Ianto (pronounced Yanto) after that lovely guy in Torchwood. In fact the plan is to call him Ianto Owen Tosh (and surname). Whats wrong with this? DP is being very funny with me over it and I am really starting to get the hump. They are all proper names! I am not calling him after a football team, or Ikea or Nintendo or anything!

My parents aren't speaking to me over this. And my sister says I am losing it and should not be naming my child after people in weird cult spin-offs in which people constantly have sex with anything which happens along, male, female or alien especially when it has nothing much to do with the plot. Which is really HER going off on one in typical style!

They are just names. And I LOVE them, as I love the characters.

Please give me some feedback. I am on my sister's PC so probably won't be back to thread until later this evening but it people could give me constructive feedback in the meantime I would be most grateful.

People will think that you are also into Jack Sparrow, so I'd avoid. How about adding Harkness in as a middle name?

TheHonEnid · 21/02/2008 15:25

Torchwood is such a pile of cack anyway

moondog · 21/02/2008 15:25

Ianto is a lovely name. It's a Welsh name actually.
I have a nephew called ianto. Oh and one called Owen too. They live in Francophone countries (also Anglophone ones) and have never had any grief.

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:25

Ianto Owen Captain Jack Harkness (single syllable surname)?

I like it but it's a but longer than I have planned.

Hmm more food for thought.

Cannot however comment on Torchwood as never sen it.

meridian · 21/02/2008 15:26

Ianto is apparently the welsh pet form of Ifan whish is the welsh form of John

expatinscotland · 21/02/2008 15:27

So, you are Welsh, Aunty M? Or your partner?

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2008 15:27

s'alright moondog - she's just 'avin a larff anyway.

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:28

HonEnid I have to say I think your opinions are a pile of cack, given as they are, with no thought to any kind of diplomacy that most grown ups manage to master.

Moondog how FAB!

I am emailing DP at work, the newest compromise.

I think I will have to get off my sister's computer now but will be back a bit later.

Oh ne er mind all that tosh about stuff being the diminutive of this and that or the Serbo-Croat for Wilfred.

It's all a pile of shite 9which is why everyone claims their child's name means 'chosen one' or 'gift from God')

If yuo like the sound of it,that's all that mattters.

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:28

No. I live in Somerset. But Torchwood is in Cardiff.

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:32

DP doesn't like it. And says he has had enough of my Dr Who related obsessions.

Honestly The main is deranged and unreasonable. Anyone would think I want to call the child Face Of Bo or something!

Sister is shoving me off..

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 21/02/2008 15:32

Well, I'd rather have my opinion be cack than put 'tosh' anywhere in a kid's name.

TheHonEnid · 21/02/2008 15:33

lol at fury from torchwood obsessive

you DID ask

actually if I met your son and heard his name was Ianto I would prob think 'how unusual and interesting'

but if I heard it was because of torchwood (ie captain jack as middle names) I would ROFL

HellHathNoFury · 21/02/2008 15:33

Pissing myself

Has to be a joke. Please tell me no-one REALLY wants to call their kid captain jack/tosh?

Ianto is a bit far fetched for me too

Spend some time on Bad Bay Names for more inspiration

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:34

Oh are you the same person as HonEnid Expat?

Sister has gone to make a cup of tea before she shoves me off to do online banking. Momentary reprieve.

I have dropped the Tosh didn't you see?

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2008 15:34

Bo is a good name. You could go with that. And since Captain Jack is the Face of Bo, you could then miss the Captain Jack bit out of the name.

TheHonEnid · 21/02/2008 15:34

if its a joke she is getting quite nasty about criticism

which makes it even more pathetic

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:35

How can an ordinary welsh christian name be "far fetched"?

OP posts:
AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:37

I wasn't being nasty HonEnid. Really. It's just that you called my names "stupid" and my favourite programme "cack". We don't all have the names like and dislikes you know. Feedback usually means something more constructive but thank you for your opinion anyway & I apologise for offending you.

OP posts:
TheHonEnid · 21/02/2008 15:38

and I am not the same person as Expat

in fact you should remember expat as she was very helpful to you on your only previous thread two years ago

TheHonEnid · 21/02/2008 15:38

but Torchwood is cack

[puzzled]

surely that is common knowledge?

ShakeysGirl · 21/02/2008 15:39

I love the name Yanto! I said to dp the other week that if we ever had another son i would be choosing that name! Not really much point having Owen though, he got shot and killed last night!

Blandmum · 21/02/2008 15:39

It isn't a stupid name in wales, where people will recognise it and will know how to say it.

why add the Owen and the Tosh? that just makes it sound faintly crazy in Wales or anywhere else.

What next? Captain Jack Rift In The Space Time Contiunum Jones?

moondog · 21/02/2008 15:39

I also have a nephew called Bo.
How bizarre.
