I want to call my baby Ianto after him in Torchwood: why is everyone on my case about it??

I am having a boy in a month or so's time. I really like Torchwood and I want to call my boy Ianto (pronounced Yanto) after that lovely guy in Torchwood. In fact the plan is to call him Ianto Owen Tosh (and surname). Whats wrong with this? DP is being very funny with me over it and I am really starting to get the hump. They are all proper names! I am not calling him after a football team, or Ikea or Nintendo or anything!

My parents aren't speaking to me over this. And my sister says I am losing it and should not be naming my child after people in weird cult spin-offs in which people constantly have sex with anything which happens along, male, female or alien especially when it has nothing much to do with the plot. Which is really HER going off on one in typical style!

They are just names. And I LOVE them, as I love the characters.

Please give me some feedback. I am on my sister's PC so probably won't be back to thread until later this evening but it people could give me constructive feedback in the meantime I would be most grateful.

She was indeed. I am flattered that you are looking me up. I am not cross with Expat, it's just that she responded as if the comment I made to you was to her.

My sister is the Mumsnet member. Not me. Although I will probably post more when Ianto Owen Captain Jack Harness (surname) is born.

Grrr ShakeysGirl - no spoilers! I haven't seen yesterdays yet .

HellHathNoFury · 21/02/2008 15:40

far fetched for me
but I didn't say it was rubbish.
Anyway, you did ask.

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:40

Owen isn't "dead" as such, I watched the BBC episode as well so no worries there

expatinscotland · 21/02/2008 15:40

Wait a sec here. Isn't Captain Jack Sparrow the bloke from Pirates of the Caribbean?

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:41

BBC3 I mean.

Ok sorry again Enid.

And sorry for any potential offence to Expat, really wasn't intended.

Why ask for feedback, though, AM, if you get upset about it? I mean, if you like the name, go for it.

But it's not to everyone's taste.

Also, you've made up your mind, so asking for feedback is a fruitless endeavour.

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:43

Yes he is Expat.

My "Jack" is Ianto Owen Captin Jack Harkness not Sparrow.

Ooops got to go!! I promise not to get upset at any further derogatory remarks entered on thread. You've actually been really helpful - I could have named DS after a rubbish heap if you hadn't helped me thus far!

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2008 15:43

Jack Sparrow from Pirates, but Jack Harkness from Torchwood.

haven't read whole post, but I wanted to call dd2 Ptolomy if she was a boy , after the lovely architect/historian chap on "restoration" and got loads of greif over it ... where do other people get names from ?? books/ plays / etc. I am named after a shakespere character , my mohter had studied the play at school and liked the name, loads of ideas/names etc come from the culture at the time, BTW i think it is a great name.

ShakeysGirl · 21/02/2008 15:45

I cried over nothing then? Real tears to! (Sorry cantsleepwontsleep)

HellHathNoFury · 21/02/2008 15:46

agree expat.
Asking for feedback is pretty much inviting criticsm.
Let's be fair - even a name as innocuous as Matthew will be loved by some, hated by some.

Personally, I have never heard of anyone called Ianto, and I would think it odd, but as I can see some find it totally normal.
I would find the Captain Jack bit mildly hysterical and I might pity the boy when he gets old enough to watch pirates of the caribbean.

If you don't want to hear negative opinions, don't ask.

What matters is that you and DH can agree on it. Which you can't.

PuppyMonkey · 21/02/2008 15:47

Aunty, actually Heap is a really good name for a baby like Uriah Heap from that Dickens novel..

moondog · 21/02/2008 15:47

I can accept people passing judgement via the anonymous web 9and lets face it ,it's terrific fun to do so) but can't imagine the utter rudeness of family and friends in doing so to yuor face.
Tell 'em to fuck off.

Good God this is unreal. You surely can't be serious... and if you are, how old are you? This is the sort of thing Channel 4 make documentaries about!

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2008 15:58

Without doubt lapin.

MrsBadger · 21/02/2008 16:03

only if you are welsh and/or live in Wales.

Ianto is a pukka welsh name, nowt wrong with it, was on our list.

Less convinced re the middle names

Nancy66 · 21/02/2008 16:08

DualCycloneCod · 21/02/2008 16:10

DualCycloneCod · 21/02/2008 16:10

adn it si a twatty name imo

hercules1 · 21/02/2008 16:10

I like the name, Ianto. Never seen torchwood though. I agree that if you want to call your child an unusual name you both have to be in complete agreement.

I have a very unusual name and have hated it all my life. Fed up of being in my 30's and still having to explain it to strangers on a regular basis. I expect I'll have to explain it for the next 50 years.

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 16:15

Yes sorry.. was kidding.. just wanted to see if anyone would swallow fact that someone might name their child after almost an entire line up of a Dr Who spin off

And Enid's repsponses were expected and appreciated

Am I too late to say that I've got a gorgeous little nephew called Ianto (nothing to do with Torchwood) In Wales it's a pretty normal name with maybe a dash of funkiness associated with it. He gets called little Iants (yants)
It's not straightforward calling a child anything out of the ordinary, ours have both got Welsh names, we live in London and some people do find them more 'challenging'. Sod 'em say I if I have to deal with 'Dayjurnay' and 'Michelmas Daisy' then they can deal with a bit of Welsh.
But to be honest I find that people are less and less fazed by unusual names - in London anyway.....
Go for Ianto - it's lovely
