I want to call my baby Ianto after him in Torchwood: why is everyone on my case about it??

I am having a boy in a month or so's time. I really like Torchwood and I want to call my boy Ianto (pronounced Yanto) after that lovely guy in Torchwood. In fact the plan is to call him Ianto Owen Tosh (and surname). Whats wrong with this? DP is being very funny with me over it and I am really starting to get the hump. They are all proper names! I am not calling him after a football team, or Ikea or Nintendo or anything!

My parents aren't speaking to me over this. And my sister says I am losing it and should not be naming my child after people in weird cult spin-offs in which people constantly have sex with anything which happens along, male, female or alien especially when it has nothing much to do with the plot. Which is really HER going off on one in typical style!

They are just names. And I LOVE them, as I love the characters.

Please give me some feedback. I am on my sister's PC so probably won't be back to thread until later this evening but it people could give me constructive feedback in the meantime I would be most grateful.

not sure if you have the same definition of compromise as me! what worked for us - each draw up a long list of names you would like , then cross off what you really couldnt live with on each others then see whats left.

I think you're a nut - but I like Ianto, it's unusual. Tosh not. And Gwen Cooper sounds like a car.

bigknickersbigknockers · 21/02/2008 15:17

Think about the poor child, Owen is nice but Ianto and tosh are terrible. Sorry, I dont mean to be rude or nasty thats just my humble opinion.

I now realise this is a joke!

I am well and truly caught out!!

Well done!

Oh good idea Collision...

crumpet · 21/02/2008 15:17

Actually a friend's son (who is half Japanese) has Toshiaki as his middle name...

collision · 21/02/2008 15:18

what was the good idea CSWS?

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:18

Yes I could drop the tosh entirely which is a shame because I like it. And I love Jack obviously, he is such a wonderful character but with Jack being such a common name I has desregarded it previously.

You've been helpful already. I will leave the Tosh as I don't want any trash connotations attached to my beautiful boy and I hadnt considered it. Ianto Owen Captain Jack (surname) I LIKE!

SenoraPostrophe · 21/02/2008 15:19

hehe

dh wanted to call ds Darth. and he wasn't joking.

Oliveoil · 21/02/2008 15:20

I like Gwen as most people will know how to pronounce it

Ianto, although ok name, will be forever called Eye-An-Toe, bet you a fiver, and not Yanto

I am forever spelling out my surname and it pisses me off no end

booge · 21/02/2008 15:20

lol, this thread has really cheered me up.

AdamAnt · 21/02/2008 15:20

How about Josh?

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:20

No really, I'm not kidding. We do have to agree on this, DP and I, as DS is due at the end of March

collision - 'I now think that couples should discuss potential names for children BEFORE they commit to each other!!)'

meridian · 21/02/2008 15:22

I would say if you really like the name use it as the middle name... so its Owen Ianto .. then you can call him Ianto but he also has a normal name that compromises with you DP but you get to keep the Ianto...

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/02/2008 15:22

What name would your dp like to give the baby?

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:22

Do people think Ianto Owen Captain Jack (single syllable surname) sounds ok even if not your specific taste?

No AM, we don't!

booge · 21/02/2008 15:23

We've been wondering what to call our (old style) mini cooper and now I know Gwen

AuntyMable · 21/02/2008 15:23

DP wants John. No middle name(s).

And he doesn't do science fiction.

You're not only going to give the child a forename from a weirdy Dr. Who spin-off but also designate one of his middlenames as Tosh?

You are hormonal. It happens. I wanted to name my daughters Pearl and Calypso, so I've been there.

But please, don't let this passing phase affect your child for the rest of his life.

Listen to your sister. It's a naff name.

expatinscotland · 21/02/2008 15:24

Sponsor a dog in a kennel. Call it Ianto.

You'll feel better and no one will get hurt.
