Registering DD tomorrow and still unsure on name!

Bootsandcats12 · 05/06/2023 20:21

DD is 6 weeks old this week and we're registering her tomorrow.

After exhaustive and fruitless discussions on names, I agreed to go with DH's favourite - Margot - mainly because I felt under pressure to name her and I didn't have any names I really loved.

We have announced her name to family and friends but the trouble is I don't love it. I don't hate it, but I'm aware it's a bit of a marmite name and, having spent too much time on MN threads, I'm aware of all the criticisms of the name

I would favour a softer sounding name, along the lines of Evelynn, Martha, or Freya.

Please help me out with suggestions, or if you think I should stick with Margot and hope that she grows into her name and I grow to love it.

We struggled with DC name. DH had a stronger preference than me, there was nothing I really loved. We went with DHs preference because I figured that we should use a name at least one of us felt strongly about. I felt a little odd using it to begin with and I must admit there were tears about me just generally being unsure on the name (and other names). If I'd had another preference we would have gone with that, but there wasn't anything that I particularly wanted or felt 100% on. The name is now his name and I am happy with it and it is just who he is. I occasionally feel sad I didn't ever get a lightbulb moment of finding a "perfect" name but I also know his name is a really nice name and it's grown on me massively. I think a lot of people struggle with names.

For what it's worth I've seen both my kids names slagged off on this board, I wouldn't think much of it and Margot is a perfectly nice name (although if it was down to me I would probably choose Martha).

My childhood friend is a Martha. I only realised as an adult that we all call her Marfa. She doesn't like her name (might be our fault!)😁

Lucy377 · 05/06/2023 23:43

I love Freya.

Sundaychild · 05/06/2023 23:45

I like Margot.
Could you choose the middle name? At a later date you can decide which name your child will be known by.

Anotheranonymousname · 05/06/2023 23:50

If Margot doesn't feel right yet, maybe it isn't the name for your DD.

Martha is lovely and I'm sure your eldest will learn to say it properly in time. If that's put you off, what about Mary or Miriam? Bethany or Anna?

Otherland · 05/06/2023 23:57

Margot is by farrrrrr my favourite of your other offerings.
How about Merryn or Amorie.

Theoldwoman · 06/06/2023 00:01

I personally prefer Freya.

Maybe you need to go with something totally different? I think you should love a name.

Ruby?
Alice?
Lillian?
Kate?
Ella?
Charlotte?

I like margot. Margot to me is the rebellious 1920s daughter from a story. Margot would smoke and drink and talk to boys she wasn’t matched with. Martha is working in the kitchen in this book. Freya I’ve never been a fan of, she’d be a bit insipid and have issues with her nerves in my period drama.

Exactly this - glad someone more eloquent than me defined it - Margot

Go with Freya.

It doesn't matter that a name doesn't seem to 'go' with the other names.

The children are not an amorphous blob, nor will they always inhabit the world as a trio.

Each one is an individual.

Martha is the nicest.

Others ..
Marina
Mary
Fern
Elsie
Victoria

What did you go for OP?

Bootsandcats12 · 06/06/2023 21:14

Thank you all for your input! Especially those who put a positive spin on Margot.
It really is a lovely name and I wished I did indeed love it. It just doesn't 'fit' my DD so we decided to go for Freya. In my gut this feels like the right choice.
I never thought I'd struggle quite so much for a girls name!

boysmuminherts · 06/06/2023 22:12

congratulations @Bootsandcats12
Freya is a lovely name xx

Mumma1799 · 07/06/2023 00:19

Margot reminds me of Maggot (sorry)
i love Martha although that is becoming a very popular name, there are 6 Martha’s in my daughters class!
i feel like Freya is less common now :)
go with your gut, you’ll regret naming her something you wasn’t 100% on as I did this with my first, she does suit her name & I grew to love it

NotAnAngelOrAHero · 07/06/2023 00:24

Freya is a beautiful name!

DuchessOfSausage · 07/06/2023 10:24

@Mumma1799 , if you look at Babies called Martha in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com), the name isn't as popular as
Babies called Freya in England & Wales since 1996 (darkgreener.com), or Margot (#57 but on a steep upward curve). Evelynn is way down the list at #1224, but Evelyn is #21, and the names Evie, Eve, and Eva are also popular

Grapewrath · 16/12/2023 17:07

I don’t like Margot- it is also very popular at the minute.
if you don’t want Martha how about Marcie?

Grapewrath · 16/12/2023 17:10

just saw you went for Freya- great choice

Needmorelego · 16/12/2023 17:10

@Grapewrath the baby is about 7 months old now and has a name.
Read the few posts above yours 🤣

Needmorelego · 16/12/2023 17:11

@Grapewrath sorry....you realised 🙂

Fraaahnces · 16/12/2023 17:13

I love Freya best, but Margot is lovely too. I live in Aus and we had a super-glam Neighbour called Margot who was lovely. She didn’t love when we played Marco Polo in the swimming pool though… Not sure if you know that one… It’s like hide and seek in the water with eyes shut and the seeker yells “Marco!” and the other players yell “Polo” until someone is caught. (Yes, everyone cheats) Anyhow, anytime someone yelled “Marco!” She’d yell back “Yeeeeees? Are you alright?” and began to think we were taunting her. Had to explain the game to her and she laughed.
