Registering DD tomorrow and still unsure on name!

Bootsandcats12 · 05/06/2023 20:21

DD is 6 weeks old this week and we're registering her tomorrow.

After exhaustive and fruitless discussions on names, I agreed to go with DH's favourite - Margot - mainly because I felt under pressure to name her and I didn't have any names I really loved.

We have announced her name to family and friends but the trouble is I don't love it. I don't hate it, but I'm aware it's a bit of a marmite name and, having spent too much time on MN threads, I'm aware of all the criticisms of the name

I would favour a softer sounding name, along the lines of Evelynn, Martha, or Freya.

Please help me out with suggestions, or if you think I should stick with Margot and hope that she grows into her name and I grow to love it.

I prefer Margot over Martha.
You need to listen to what your gut feeling is trying to say to you though.

Joeylove88 · 05/06/2023 22:23

Aria
Ella
Azura
Indiee
Ava
Willow

Some of my favourites and my baby girls name is one of those 🩷

NotAnAngelOrAHero · 05/06/2023 22:23

From your OP I think you'll regret the name of you do use it.

For what it's worth I like the name Margot! But like you I don't absolutely love it.

I do really love the name Evelyn though! I love the way I looks and sounds. Rolls off the tongue beautifully and is timeless IMO.

What does DH think?

Ducksurprise · 05/06/2023 22:25

Like Jodie!

How about Sarah, Suzanah, Claire or Caroline

Normative · 05/06/2023 22:28

How about
Maya
Mary (I really want a baby Mary!)
Thea
Frances

coronabeer · 05/06/2023 22:31

Don’t go with Margot if you’re not comfortable with it.

Soft names:
Olivia
Phoebe
Lucy
Mary
Julia
Emma

FloofCloud · 05/06/2023 22:34

Molly?

LynetteScavo · 05/06/2023 22:36

I love the name Margot, but if you don't then you need to find something you do love. (I really like DDs name but don't LOVE it)

I avoided Thea because DS said "Fear". He would have outgrown than though, and Martha is lovely. I don't like the way its pronounced Marta in other countries though.

thunderandsunshine01 · 05/06/2023 22:37

I love Margot and don’t really care for Freya or Martha. But my opinion doesn’t matter! If you don’t love it, now is the time to change it.
I echo everything @SneezyEvie said

overfeckinstimulated · 05/06/2023 22:38

Margot is beautiful! I think it does have a soft sound. It's cute for a little girl and for a grown up it's classy, elegant, but also a bit kick ass. Disclaimer: I have a good friend called Margot and she's ace 😆

NeverMindTryAgain · 05/06/2023 22:39

I could have written this post two years ago. I stuck with it and I'm really glad I did but it's a bit grown up sounding on a tiny newborn right?! However on a whirlwind toddler it's fab. I had massively mixed feelings on the name for 18 months and now she couldn't be anyone else.

boysmuminherts · 05/06/2023 22:40

I like Margot but if you don't, then absolutely do not give your daughter that name. Martha is lovely.

fruitbrewhaha · 05/06/2023 22:42

I like margot. Margot to me is the rebellious 1920s daughter from a story. Margot would smoke and drink and talk to boys she wasn’t matched with. Martha is working in the kitchen in this book. Freya I’ve never been a fan of, she’d be a bit insipid and have issues with her nerves in my period drama.

3isthemagicnumberrr · 05/06/2023 22:42

I love Martha. Don’t go with a name you don’t love. DS is 10 months and I still don’t love his name (we couldn’t decide and I felt pressured into it).

Daisybuttercup12345 · 05/06/2023 22:44

Love Martha and Freya. Don't like Margot at all.

I like Margot but if it's not sift bright what about Maisie

or
Eliza
Florence (Floss/Flo/Florrie)
Clementine

ChufftyBadge · 05/06/2023 22:54

Soft bright?? soft enough

Bootsandcats12 · 05/06/2023 21:40

Thanks, all. Some really good suggestions here.

DH likes Freya but doesn’t think it goes with our other children’s names 🙄 We have two under 5 and when asked about Martha earlier my eldest pronounced it ‘mar-fa’ which has taken the shine off somewhat - I’d be forever correcting the mispronunciation 🫣

Does it matter though? Your children are not actually a set, they are going to go out into the world and live their own independent and separate lives.

SheilaFentiman · 05/06/2023 23:00

I like Margot and Martha

If DH likes Martha too, go with that, your little ones will pronounce it correctly eventually (or she will get a random family nickname like pumpkin 😀)

SheilaFentiman · 05/06/2023 23:01

Marnie? Keeps the first syllable.

crabbyoldappletree · 05/06/2023 23:04

You have to register your daughters birth, but if you can't decide on her name, you can just put 'baby' on the document and as soon as you have a name you contact the registry office and they'll change it, there is a small admin fee (It was £10 when we did this 11 yrs ago. ds was simply 'bean' for several months until we finally agreed on his name!) so try not to worry too much. You can also change the name (I think it's the first 12 months...but not entirely sure) quite easily once you've registered.

Deadringer · 05/06/2023 23:06

Maya is lovely, or what about Moira?

ImpromptuGathering · 05/06/2023 23:07

Margot, to me, is a name you have to love to choose. It's such a strong spelling. Names that bridge the gap between Margot and Martha or Freya

Audrey?
Fritha?
Mara?
Marnie?
Matilda?
Tara?

ImpromptuGathering · 05/06/2023 23:11

Rhoda?
Sylvie?
Phoebe?

DelphiniumBlue · 05/06/2023 23:12

Margot is an abbreviation for Marguerite or Margaret- would you consider one of those and then see what shortened version naturally evolves?
Marguerite is lovely and could be Margot/Margaux or Maggie or Daisy.
