I won't say what the name we'd agreed on was as I'm still hoping to use it but I need some back up options in case he refuses.

I like:

Betty
Penny
Birdy
Bonnie
Connie
Saffy
Daphne

The issue is I don't always like the longer formal versions (Bridget, Saffron, Elizabeth, Penelope, Constance). I want something easy to spell and that works on an adult as well as a baby/toddler.

Sorry but I fall into the category of 'give your child the long version of the name'. Many shortened versions sound OK for babies /toddlers but really sound very childish for adults. And the child has no option to ask for a different diminutive.
Could anyone tell me when Birdy actually became a name? I really don't like that!

Skybluepinky · 04/05/2023 07:40

Not Birdie, can u imagine the teasing as she gets older!

DucksNewburyport · 04/05/2023 07:43

My favourites from your list are Connie, Bonnie and Penny. I don't think you necessarily need a full version for these names.

Betty is ok. I prefer Libby or Beth if you're thinking of nicknames for Elizabeth.

Not keen on Birdie, Daphne or Saffy.

Whyisitsosohard · 04/05/2023 07:44

Sorry I seem to have confused people. I do want to give her a full name, not a nickname. The issue is I like the short versions but not the longer ones. Also really wasn't trying to be contentious with the title, I thought posting in names would be clear 😂

Peggy?

margarine17 · 04/05/2023 07:52

Oh and my Grandma was Connie but her "real name " was Cornelia if you like that more than Constance

Morph22010 · 04/05/2023 07:53

I read the thread title in active and thought dh had changed his mind on having a baby, thought bit bloody late now

BartsLongLostBro · 04/05/2023 07:56

Love your names and style op.

Except bridget, sorry.

slowquickstep · 04/05/2023 08:13

What about Neela

PainAuChocowhat · 04/05/2023 08:45

I know you literally said it in the OP 🫣 and a year ago I’d have agreed, but there’s a little girl at DD’s nursery (so age 2) called Penelope and I’m just in love with the name now. She gets P as a shortened version from her mum (and ‘Nelope from DD) but has options when she gets older. Plus the name differentiates her from the multitude of Olivias, Sophies and Roses we know (all lovely names and I completely understand why they’re popular).

Whyisitsosohard · 04/05/2023 09:07

I like Pea too for Penelope. Nina and Lara are slightly more 'grown up' options people have mentioned that are less cutesy. I do like the more old fashioned ones though..

Daphne
Delphi
Nora
Frieda
Celia
Eadie
Anna
Jolie
Margo
leonie
Sylvie

Thewitcherswolf · 04/05/2023 09:20

Bridie (Like bride + y)?
Sylvie is nice too.
I really like Daphne from your list.

florenceandthemutt · 04/05/2023 09:26

Eliza is a name in it's own right and doesn't have to be shortened from Elizabeth. My Grandma was called Betty. It was her actual name and was also not shortened from Elizabeth.

Whyisitsosohard · 04/05/2023 09:29

I also worry people will think we named her Penny from the big bang theory. 😂

WaltzingWaters · 04/05/2023 09:30

Please don’t go with Birdy or Betty. I’m sorry but, just no.

Bonnie, Connie, or Daphne would be my preference from those.

Whyisitsosohard · 04/05/2023 09:31

The issue is he doesn't like any of my list so I'm trying to find adjacent names..

What names has he suggested?

Dinosaurdrip · 04/05/2023 09:33

I have a 3 month old Connie, we toyed with Constance for ages but eventually settled on Connie nn Coco.
We also liked Maggie, Nancy, Indie, Nora, Evelyn, Lucy.

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 04/05/2023 09:35

Please don’t call your child, who is going to be an adult for the majority of their life, Birdy.

CoffeeandCheesecake · 04/05/2023 09:39

My favourites are Nina and Penelope so far.

What about:
Marina - Mary, Nina
Phoebe/Beatrice/Beatrix - Fee, Bea, Trixy
Eleanor - Nora, Ellen, Ellen
Cassandra - Cassie
Cordelia - Cordy, Delia, Cora
Adelaide - Adele, Delly
Charlotte - Charlie, Little
Veronica - Vera, Ronnie

CoffeeandCheesecake · 04/05/2023 09:40

Should read Nora, Ellen, Elle. Not Ellen, Ellen!

CoffeeandCheesecake · 04/05/2023 09:41

Fgs, and Lottie not little.

Itsallok · 04/05/2023 09:43

Please NOT Birdy - how you could consider landing a child with such a stupid name is beyond me. I mean really. You are not being original - just dopey. Only a slight touch above people who call their children names with ridiculous spellings, who think they are being original.

Whyisitsosohard · 04/05/2023 09:45

Slight overreaction there. Lots of people like the name Birdy. It's really not that unusual and her name would be Bridget and it would be a nn. Either way I don't like Bridget enough to choose it.
