I won't say what the name we'd agreed on was as I'm still hoping to use it but I need some back up options in case he refuses.

I like:

Betty
Penny
Birdy
Bonnie
Connie
Saffy
Daphne

The issue is I don't always like the longer formal versions (Bridget, Saffron, Elizabeth, Penelope, Constance). I want something easy to spell and that works on an adult as well as a baby/toddler.

Tamzin/Tamsin? Could use Tammy or Tamsy, as a cute nickname/everyday name, but she'd also have a beautiful full name to use if she prefers.

Rosie is also lovely, and a proper name without having to have a longer version.

Fenella... Nell, Nellie are nice shorter versions, and Fenella is unusual enough to not be over popular, but a lovely well known name.

We know a Bryony who goes by Bon, Bonnie.

My daughter is Tabitha on her birth certificate, but everyone knows her as Tabi. When she started school we were sent a form to give their preferred name, and she has only ever been known as Tabi. If you ask her what her name is she will tell you it's Tabi. People will call her what you tell them to, so the birth certificate name is really just a formality and to give them options, and so they have a proper name, not just a cutesy name when they grow up.

You seem to like names that end in a vowel,
how about
Ellodie
I don’t even know if that’s how you spell it.

silentpool · 04/05/2023 09:49

Please consider giving her a business card worthy name. I have a longer name, which is always shortened but I can bring out the full version when I need gravitas.

Theoldwoman · 04/05/2023 09:50

I don’t really like any of your names. I wouldn’t like to be saddled with them personally. Probably Daphne is the best.

ItsNotWhatItsNot · 04/05/2023 09:52

Is ‘birdy’ a name? Do you mean Bridie?

Otterock · 04/05/2023 09:54

Theodora shortened to Theo?
Mia
Ivy
Iris
Zoe
I once met an Athelyn and thought it was such a beautiful name, could be shortened to Lyn, Linnie, Athy for every day?

Theoldwoman · 04/05/2023 09:56

Life With Beans on YT has 9 kids, and her youngest is Birdie.

BungleandGeorge · 04/05/2023 09:58

If you want to call your child Betty why on Earth must you pick Elizabeth so that the child has the option of calling themselves Liz? An individual is quite entitled to go by any name they want but the given name is the choice of the parents.
I think your names are all fine and won’t raise any eyebrows apart from birdy. Which could go either way depending on who they grow into. It may be wonderfully unique and creative and fit them really well or it could be a total mismatch . If they go into something creative could be a big advantage to have a unique name and I don’t think traditional environments are as conservative as they once were. The others are safer choices though. Personally I like Daphne but it’s not particularly easy to spell

My favourites are Nina and Penelope so far.

What about:
Marina - Mary, Nina
Phoebe/Beatrice/Beatrix - Fee, Bea, Trixy
Eleanor - Nora, Ellen, Ellen
Cassandra - Cassie
Cordelia - Cordy, Delia, Cora
Adelaide - Adele, Delly
Charlotte - Charlie, Little
Veronica - Vera, Ronnie

Don’t like any of OP’s list, will date massively.

Love these suggestions @CoffeeandCheesecake can’t better them!

Thewitcherswolf · 04/05/2023 10:05

What about Holly?
Sally?
Antonia - could be Toni for short
Veronica - Ronnie for short

RB68 · 04/05/2023 10:08

Wren or Robin could also be Birdy as a nicname

FernGully43 · 04/05/2023 10:14

I love Penny and Bonnie.

Please for the love of all things holy, don't call your child Birdy...

CoolCalmCollected · 04/05/2023 10:16

I'm obviously in the minority but I love Birdy 🤗
I also like Connie and Betty from your list.

How about Dorothy / Dotty?

Brisland · 04/05/2023 10:20

Please don’t call your daughter by the nickname P (or Pea or Pee). Kids and parents can be cruel.

Puffalicious · 04/05/2023 10:32

Throwing my tuppenceworth in.

I love Fi/ Fie

I have two gorgeous friends who are both Fiona, but are nn Fi/ Fie. Also works , as mentioned, for Phoebe.

I know a teen Penelope who goes by Pen- love that.

Catriona nn Cat or Cate/ Kate. But I know it's v Scottish. (All my favourite names are, because I live here 😆).

I also have a lovely friend Tash (Natasha) which I've always liked.

cordelia16 · 04/05/2023 10:32

If you like Nina except for the fire engine sound, what about Mina?

MindIfISlytherin · 04/05/2023 10:33

I love Daphne but would be worried it's a bit 'of its time' with Bridgerton still being popular.
How about a flower name? They can be cute for toddlers but still a 'proper name' for adulthood.

Also going to suggest:
Harriet (nn Hatty)
Thaddea (I adore this name)
Deirdre (nn DeeDee)
Fiona (nn Fi or FiFi)
Florence (nn Flo)

Also if you're not a fan of Constance, I went to uni with someone with the Portuguese or Spanish version of the name (Contancia) which sounds a bit prettier.

Mseddy · 04/05/2023 10:42

If you like old names my DD is Alma. Although it can only really be shortened to Ali or Al. It's definitely a marmite name, but we love it obviously.
My husband was on the fence and then decided he liked it when she was born, so you may get your original name choice anyway

silentpool · 04/05/2023 09:49

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Any name is business card worthy.... You just type it on the business card and fucking print it off!

LAMPS1 · 04/05/2023 10:46

Elinor …Ellie, Elle, Nora, Leni.

JenniferBarkley · 04/05/2023 10:51

I usually hate cutesie names, but I actually love Birdy as a nickname. Not on the roll at school, but within the family.

I don't have the same taste, so I'm trying to think of my DCs' friends' names...

Poppy
Cora
Ada
Lottie
Harper
Lily/Lillie
Betsy
Audrey
Julie

Henbags · 04/05/2023 10:57

My 96 year old grandma is called Daphne so it’s a definite no-no to me! Also makes me think of the cartoon character from Scooby Doo, and Daphnia which is a crustacean..

GalaApples · 04/05/2023 11:00

What about Leila? It is a full name but still short.

SheilaFentiman · 04/05/2023 11:00

Elodie

Tamara would also give you Tammy

Goldbar · 04/05/2023 11:06

Leonie/Leonora (Leo)
Eleanor (Nell)
Adeline (Addy/Deli)
Delphine (Fe)
Harriet (Hatty)
Cordelia (Deli)
Elowyn (Winnie)
Francesca/Frances (Fran/Frankie)
Margaret (Meg/Molly)
Meredith (Merry)
Althea/Alethea (Thea)
