I won't say what the name we'd agreed on was as I'm still hoping to use it but I need some back up options in case he refuses.

I like:

Betty
Penny
Birdy
Bonnie
Connie
Saffy
Daphne

The issue is I don't always like the longer formal versions (Bridget, Saffron, Elizabeth, Penelope, Constance). I want something easy to spell and that works on an adult as well as a baby/toddler.

Bridget is a beautiful name.
Bridie is lovely for a woman and Birdie for a girl.

I also like Bonnie, and Daphne only as a second name as I don't like Daffy.

Do you like..
Heidi
Dulcie
Eliza
Rosemary - Rosie
Mary - Maisie
Finella - Fifi
Maggie

Pippa

Birdy Pee.

I would hate to be called birdy, catty, horsey etc. Surely it’s a typo of Bridie?

JuneOsborne · 04/05/2023 11:21

I think Daphne is just lovely!

UrsulaBelle · 04/05/2023 11:24

Margaret gives lots of nickname potential.
Maggie, Meg, Peggy, Margot, Daisy, Pearl.
Same with Elizabeth.
Lizzie, Eliza, Libby, Beth, Betty, Bess, Bessie.

I like Pea too for Penelope. Nina and Lara are slightly more 'grown up' options people have mentioned that are less cutesy. I do like the more old fashioned ones though..

But she is going to be a grown up one day and having a ‘cutesy’ name may be nice when they are a toddler but may not be suitable when they are an adult. I would hate having to introduce myself in a professional setting with some of the names you have noted

I would formally give her the full name and call her the cutest name and your child can then make her own choice when she is older what she wants to be known as

In fact, my aunt Margaret (95) is always Marnie.

Crikeyalmighty · 04/05/2023 11:56

Other ones that are short or have a shortened version that might be your style

Dora
Matilda (Tilly)
Charlotte (Lottie)
Alexandra (Lexie)
Polly
Eloise (Ella or LuLu )

willWillSmithsmith · 04/05/2023 12:04

Out of that list I’d choose Penny but I think one that’s already been suggested would be a good name is Sadie. I think it’s a really cool name.

willWillSmithsmith · 04/05/2023 12:05

Another name I think fits with your style is Marnie.

Swishhh · 04/05/2023 12:06

Polly
Sadie
Nancy

I love Polly and Nancy.

Ha I missed your post as I just mentioned Marnie it’s a great name (but don’t like Margaret).

fairycupcakes · 04/05/2023 12:41

Callie?

Ottersmith · 04/05/2023 12:44

Will the child have his surname? And will you be carrying her for 9 months and birthing her whilst suffering great pain? Well then forget what he says you can have the original name wait till after you've given birth and see what he says then. Or say she should have your surname and use it as collateral. Also forget all the people on here jusging your name choices.

FfoxRedN · 04/05/2023 12:51

A friend of ours called her little girl Zafia.
It could be shortened to Fi, Zaf, isn't common and isn't old fashioned.

booktokbear · 04/05/2023 13:01

I love Ophelia - Phee for a nn

DuchessOfSausage · 04/05/2023 13:06

@Thirdsummerofourdiscontent , Elodie

@Whyisitsosohard , Birdy is a nickname not a name

Whyisitsosohard · 04/05/2023 13:12

I appreciate name taste is subjective but I've also said several times Birdy would be a nn for Bridget not the actual given name. And no it's not a typo of Bridie, its an alt nn. Some of the other suggestions have been great food for thought which I really appreciate but bowing out of the thread now.

With the possibly exception of Penelope, I can't see that the full versions of those names are difficult to spell. Why not just go for those?

Please don’t call your daughter by the nickname P (or Pea or Pee). Kids and parents can be cruel.

To be fair, kids can be cruel about anything, and in unexpected ways. I went to school with a Pea (Petra), with no wee-related comments on her name, and a Tamsin, who spent however many long years being referred to as Tampax Tamsin.
