How popular is Piper?

I love the girls name Piper, and I’m considering calling DD this. Is it an unusual name? Because I haven’t met any. Is Piper a nice name? Do you know any Pipers, and if so, how many, how old are they and where abouts are you in the country? I live in a suburban area in London, and I can’t remember hearing the name so hopefully it will be nice and unusual. Opinions are welcome ❤️

I know a dog called Piper but no children.

Lindy2 · 16/04/2023 17:35

I know one. They are a teenager living in the USA.

I think of it as an American name really but there's no reason you can't use it.

Razorrainbow · 16/04/2023 17:45

My DD is a Piper she is 6. We live in the southwest.

You can see its popularity over time on Darkgreener: https://names.darkgreener.com/#piper

It’s still relatively unusual (#168, 308 babies in 2021) but it is on a meteoritic upwards trajectory when you consider that it used be virtually unheard of. It has jumped nearly 400 places in ten years which is unusual in name trends, which tend to move quite slowly. I think it is the next Harper.

I know a horse and a dog called Piper (and in fact I recommended it as a dog name on a thread here just a day or so ago 😄).

Only a family with Piper as their surname.

happyjules · 16/04/2023 18:14

I have a Piper who will be sixteen in September. She was born in Devon when we were living in East Cornwall. It's actually an old English name meaning pipe player, just has been more popular in the USA. I found It in the Fourty thousand and one baby name book and fitted my requirements for being unusual enough and went well with Kricket elder daughter's name and totally outing.) It was my second choice of name for her as the first choice would give an unacceptable initial sequence. We have met one other Piper many years ago. I'm obviously bias but she is a delightful girl and the name really suits her.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 16/04/2023 18:22

I know a 10 year old in Scotland

anonymouschef · 16/04/2023 18:22

I only know one and I love it
Also Tori

newusernamegloria · 16/04/2023 18:46

I know a couple, I'm in the US. It's also a type of plane, so some people choose it for that, like Piper Palin, Sarah Palin's daughter

FayCarew · 16/04/2023 19:24

It's a surname. Will get shortened to Pipe or Pipes.

JoJo10 · 16/04/2023 19:25

I only know one, she’s 7 and from Yorkshire.

Greeneyegirl · 16/04/2023 19:28

Don't know any but I know it was used in Charmed as one of the main characters names which a lot of people who are in their 30s now watched so I recon it would become popular soon. A friend of mine wants to use it for future DD

Fudgewomble · 16/04/2023 19:29

I only know a (very nice) dog in the Uk and a few Americans

COPPER3 · 16/04/2023 19:32

I like this name! I like the fact that it is unusual. I haven't met anyone (or pet) with this name. Go for it!

Spanielsarepainless · 16/04/2023 19:34

I met a Piper a few years ago and have met several since.

lemonyellows · 16/04/2023 19:35

gogohmm · 16/04/2023 19:36

It's a position in a highland band, no just no

Brendabigbaps · 16/04/2023 19:38

I know someone who has it as a surname, they get very annoyed when lots of people can’t pronounce it! Pip-er

Sadiegirl87 · 16/04/2023 19:40

I don't know any but think it's a lovely unique name which people have heard of, good choice ☺️

Oldermum84 · 16/04/2023 19:44

Love it. Never met anyone with the name.

I am fascinated by this.

piper is pie-per, rhymes with swiper because of the split digraph i_e. Are you saying they pronounce it pip-er, to rhyme with zipper?!

FayCarew · 16/04/2023 19:58

@ZoyaTheDestroyer , look on local free sites and you'll see things like Dinning Tables and Filling Cabinets listed.
