Aurora?

Happy Easter weekend Mumsnetters!
I recently posted re favourite Elle names and think we have settled on Arielle (pronounced Ari-Elle NOT Ariel).
However for some reason Aurora keeps popping into my head. I originally dismissed this as couldn’t think of any nice nicknames other than Rory which I find a bit masculine.
Wondering if you have any experience of alternative nicknames for Aurora and which name of the two you prefer?
TIA

Aurora is beautiful. It means Dawn in Spanish.

quietnightmare · 07/04/2023 15:24

Love it but it is popular
My friend goes by 'Rory' but was 'roara' when we were children

azafata2 · 07/04/2023 15:28

How about

Arabella

glasshole · 07/04/2023 15:30

I've got a dog called Aurora, a beautiful little chihuahua. Her nicknames are Rory, RoRo and little legs. So expect the first two, maybe not so much the little legs 😁. It's a beautiful name for a little girl.

sunshineandmango · 07/04/2023 15:34

@azafata2 thank you for the input! Strangely I really don’t like Arabella (know it’s similar to Arielle but I find it more frilly for some reason)

@quietnightmare quite like Roara! Prefer it to Rory anyway. Do you mind me asking which part of the country you are in? I’m up north and doesn’t seem too popular up here from what I can tell.

@glasshole excellent choice name for your pooch! 🐶

I think Aurora is lovely and short enough that it doesn't need a nickname! Also, less likely to be mispronounced than Arielle (I'd say a lot of people would assume it was Ariel). Have you considered Aurelia?

sunshineandmango · 07/04/2023 15:54

@twosquashedmelons yes that’s a good point re mispronunciation! We have thought about Aurelia but DH isn’t keen - he thinks it’s too close to ‘orally’. I do think it’s lovely though.

Aurelie is pretty - Ar eh lee

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 07/04/2023 16:06

I like Aurora. It's unusual. Classy

FayCarew · 07/04/2023 16:13

Aurora is quite nice but a lot of people can't say R, and it will be Owowa or Ovova.

sunshineandmango · 07/04/2023 16:14

@FayCarew 😂😂😂 don’t think it will be a problem with our accents but that would be a very good point if it was 😂

I find Aurora a bit of a mouthful to say. I prefer Arielle but not mu baby not my choice.

washinwashoutrepeat · 07/04/2023 16:42

I love it. I work with an Aurore (French)

usererror99 · 07/04/2023 16:43

I always think Aurora is awful to be honest and suggestive of adult parents overly invested in Disney princesses

Didicat · 07/04/2023 17:07

From someone with a friends daughter - people somehow struggle to spell it, depends on how you want it pronounced Au -ro-ra (oa-phoneme) we sometimes get Ar like a pirate Ar- Ra - Ra

shortened to the Rory or Roar-ra

halfsiesonapotnoodle · 07/04/2023 17:13

Can't bear the name. Someone said on here it is like Woar woar woar. Can't ever forget that. I don't like the 'roar' noise it makes.

Houselamp · 07/04/2023 17:17

I like Aurora, The ones I know have either used the full name or been Rory, Rora, Auri (Aww-Ree), Roo and Aura

shoopshoopdedoo · 07/04/2023 17:45

I personally think it’s a bit frilly - obviously just personal taste though! I think I’m in the minority though - it gets a lot of love on MN and I’ve met quite a few little ones (based in SE)

sunshineandmango · 07/04/2023 17:58

Thank you all for the opinions and nickname suggestions! The more I think about it, the more I love Aurora but is a case of persuading DH, who wonders if it is too frilly/Disney princess esque. Ironically he has just suggested Flora as has the same ‘ora’ ending. I had to point out to him that this is also a character in sleeping beauty, not that it bothers me 😂😂 We shall see, we have a little while to think about it.

How about Lorelei?

Tellmethespoiler · 07/04/2023 18:15

Not keen on Arielle or Aurora. Flora is a million times better.

sunshineandmango · 07/04/2023 18:15

@RandomMess not too keen on that one, thank you for the suggestion though

Borealis.

jackstini · 07/04/2023 18:23

I prefer Aurora to Arielle
Also like Ariana and Eliana
Or Ariadne is a bit similar

PickledScrump · 07/04/2023 18:26

Arielle is better than Aurora. Flora is miles better than either of them.
