Aurora?

Happy Easter weekend Mumsnetters!
I recently posted re favourite Elle names and think we have settled on Arielle (pronounced Ari-Elle NOT Ariel).
However for some reason Aurora keeps popping into my head. I originally dismissed this as couldn’t think of any nice nicknames other than Rory which I find a bit masculine.
Wondering if you have any experience of alternative nicknames for Aurora and which name of the two you prefer?
TIA

Arielle is better than Aurora. Flora is miles better than either of them.

Flora! No! It's a brand of toilet paper and margarine!

twosquashedmelons · 08/04/2023 00:50

If it's the 'ora' sound you're after, I taught a girl named Elora? Her mum was a fan of the Willow film 😂I liked the name on her anyway!

DiscoBeat · 08/04/2023 00:58

We avoided heavy 'R' names in case they couldn't say them!

CallieQ · 08/04/2023 01:13

Aura is nice

LuluBlakey1 · 08/04/2023 01:19

Depend where you live and the accent. It's a bit of a pretentious mouthful for a council estate in Halifax or Gateshead. Probably get away with it in Hampshire or Harrogate.

lemmein · 08/04/2023 03:05

I think it's a bit of a mouthful - it's one of those names I feel like I'm not saying properly even though I am!

Aurora is sweet, of the times and strong.
Aurora Laura ... ha ha - no.

Aurora Cate
Aurora Jean
Aurora Lily
Aurora Catherine
Aurora Elspeth
Aurora Charlotte
Aurora Faye
Aurora Alice

@Phoebo Flora is a brand of toilet paper? Didn’t know that! 😂 what are the retailers doing to a beautiful name

@LadyEloise1 Aurelie is gorgeous, thanks for the suggestion. Just worried the pronoun cation of this may be too close to orally? May struggle to get it past DH. Is it an ‘A’ or ‘Or’ sound at the start?

FayCarew · 08/04/2023 08:25

@sunshineandmango , people say Aurelie as Oh-ruh-lee or Oh-ray-lee. The former sounds like Orally.

@user1492757084 , Aurora Alice is too close to Aurora Borealis

@Phoebo , aurora means dawn in many languages

sunshineandmango · 08/04/2023 08:28

@FayCarew thanks for the clarification :)

What about Aurelia?

Could call Aurora 'roo' as a nickname

sunshineandmango · 08/04/2023 10:11

@mumonherphone I like Aurelia but not quite as much as Aurora. DH has also vetoed it as he thinks it sounds similar to ‘orally’.
Love your suggestion of the nn Roo, that’s very sweet :)

Any more thoughts on our Aurora vs Flora dilemma?
DH seems pretty set on Flora now. I think it’s lovely but do have some concerns re potential for bullying with the margarine/gut flora links.
On the converse side, he is concerned Aurora is too Disney princess vibes.
Arielle is still floating in the background but probably no longer a forerunner.
Never thought it would be so difficult to decide!

Flora is much nicer.

rainbowstardrops · 10/04/2023 12:13

I've worked with children for 30 odd years and recently, in one school, had two Auroras. Bit of a mouthful for me.
Haven't ever come across an Arielle and I like that!

Sadiegirl87 · 10/04/2023 18:01

I prefer Aurora, sounds beautiful and I wouldn't worry about a nickname just call her the full name. Arielle is also nice but I just hear Sebastian the crab say Ariel in a Jamaican accent 🤣

PurpleAirGuitar · 10/04/2023 23:33

I quite like Aurora although I think I like Aurelia even more (but appreciate that you probably won't be able to use it).

I think Flora is quite popular now and very unlikely to lead to teasing, unless she is unlucky enough to come across the sort of people who will tease anyone about anything, so if it wasn't that it would be something else. I don't like it quite as much as Aurora or Aurelia, but it is quite a pretty name.

I think I like Arielle (I might not have heard in in exactly that form before) but I really like Marielle, so let me just throw that one into the mix for your consideration.

if you do use Aurora, please don't use Rory as a short form. The many male Rorys wouldn't thank you. I don't actually think it needs a short form, it's not ridiculously long, but if I had to use one, I'd prefer Aura (or you could spell it Ora!)

MaryShelley1818 · 11/04/2023 05:48

Flora is so much nicer. Aurora is very common now, very twee and frilly too due to it's Disney Princess association. I see a pink frilly designer pram and personalised dummy clip lol.

GBoucher · 11/04/2023 06:04

Flora reminds me of gut flora. Arielle reminds me of areola/areolae. Aurora is a bit of a mouthful... If you like -ora names, why not Laura? I also like Aurelia and Lorelei but see that you have dinged them already.

SneezyEvie · 11/04/2023 13:56

Go Flora!

sunshineandmango · 22/04/2023 21:56

@GBoucher not a fan of Laura unfortunately.

Thank you all for the useful opinions. We are still mulling it over. Ella has also been added to the mix.
