I'm expecting a baby girl and am interested to know what names are coming up in your child's nursery or class (primary school) a lot at the moment?

We are a massive school (double intake)

Oddly there aren't as many duplicates are you'd expect.

x3 Harry's (span over the two classes of that year group. 2 in one class and 1 in the other)
x2 Scarlett's (in one class)
There is a Beatrice and a Beatrix in opposite classes and an Edith / Edie in the same class (Edie is an Edie not an Edith)
There are variations of Isabella / Isabella and the same with Eva / Ava / Evie / Eve in one year group but no actual duplication.
Most popular seems to be George. 5 overall in the same year group, over 2 classes.

We’ve got loads of Ellas and Darceys. And Amelias.

Crunchymum · 02/04/2023 19:37
  • Variations of Isabelle / Isabella / Belle / Bella (throughout the school and not particularly in the same year group)

Where do you live that two-form entry is considered massive?

Funny how it goes, when I picked dd's name it wasn't even top hundred (she is only 3) and now it's all over this thread!

Have you downloaded the spreadsheets from the ONS website? That will give you the cold, hard stats you seem to be looking for, also broken down by region. I can tell you from personal experience that most kids round here seem to be called Eva, Ava, Isla and Albie, Alfie, Teddy, but that's just anecdotal. You need to get geeky with the data if you want/ don't want a popular name.

Yes, there are some names coming up a lot that I thought were more usual than they perhaps are!

I like dark greener to look at name trends but it doesn’t help for the names which are really similar such as Amelia, Amalia, Amelie, Emily, Emilie, Lily, Millie…etc. For example, Amelie isn’t overly popular yet it feels it amongst these.

Ava, Eva, Evie, Eve, Aria,Mia, Maya, Isla-the e and an ending names are also popular and similar.

Phoebe seems popular here too atm.

Yes, the tweaks to spellings and similar sounding names make it hard to really tell what's popular from the name charts alone

My daughter is at nursery. The multiples in her year are:

Chloe x 2
Jessica x 3
Lilly x 3
Sophia x 2

Somanycats · 03/04/2023 01:12

2x Emily, Charlotte, George and Thomas.

Olivia is still going strong after 22 years! I loved this for my first dd but suspected it was going to blow up so didn’t use it. Of course 16 yr old DS’s girlfriend is Olivia (Livvy). Still love the name though.

My niece is 16 and called Polly. Her best friends at primary were Holly, Milly and Lily.

If anyone is brave enough to call their daughter Helen or Jacqueline she is unlikely to meet another one for the whole of her school career.

It is a beautiful name! Although it's very popular, I haven't come across one in my neck of the woods actually.

Yes, Jackie would be the only one I'm sure!

Currently (across year groups because our class sizes are small. Year groups of 25 to 40 children):
4 year groups with no repeated names
1 year group with 2 X Chloe and 2 X Isla
1 year group with 3 X Thomas, 2 X William, 2 X Alex and 2 X David
1 year group with 2 X Holly
1 year group with 2 X Charlie
1 year group with 3 X Max and 2 X Sofia

Scotskynon · 08/04/2023 08:22

I was thinking the same thing! I had 3 classes to year in primary, 30-35 er class and 9 or 10 classes per year in high, 30ish to a class!

In DD's intake (Y1 now) there is only Olivia, the most popular that year plus only one of a couple of other top 10 names. A Couple of variations of Isabelle. There are two Phoebes. DD is the only one in the school, as are a couple of her friends. Not unusual but uncommon names.

Boys have more repetition of George, Jacob, Jackson, Reggie
