I'm expecting a baby girl and am interested to know what names are coming up in your child's nursery or class (primary school) a lot at the moment?

Freya, Ava, Eva, Evie, Isla, Emily, Amaya and Isabel/Isabelle/Isabella are the most popular for girls in ours.

Theo, Harry, Henry, Freddie, William for boys.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 01/04/2023 22:05

I find there are really noticeable patterns. The most common girls’ pattern is ‘ay’ or ‘i’ + v: Eva, Ivy, Ava, Evie, Maeve, Evelyn - plus Aoife and Ewa as honourable mentions.

Saschka · 01/04/2023 22:18

Boys:
Lots of Theo’s, Felixes and Caspars.

Girls:
Ada/Ava/Isla/Evie etc
Layla/Lila/Leela etc
Couple of Phoebes, Sofias and Olives in the year as well.

We seem to have escaped the -Mae names, which I am pretty relieved about. And the grandad names (Arthur, Archibald, Cedric, Cuthbert, Edgar, etc).

Most of the names in DD’s Reception year (60kids, London) are spectacularly dull. Multiples of Luna, Isla, Sienna, Aria, Clara. About half the boys are called some variation on a theme of Alfie/Albie/Archie/Arthur/Arlo.

Very few choices outside the ‘usual suspects’ in the top 100. Most ‘out there’ names would probably be the old lady/old man category - lots of Mabels, Olives and Adas are coming through. But clearly the more adventurous and cosmopolitan naming trends haven’t reached our suburb yet!

Can I ask the name of your DD? Or would that be outing?

DS is two, we know several:

Freya/Lily/Florence

A lot in the old lady theme of Cora/Sadie/Mabel/Olive/Connie/Ada

Maeve seems to be becoming quite popular.

blankittyblank · 01/04/2023 22:54

There are 3 Audrey's in my sons year (year2). And a few Indi's - Boys and girls.

853ax · 01/04/2023 22:55

Harry & Leo very popular 4-6yo
Ava/Evie/Eva all popular and easy mix up same with
Maya/Mia
Look at published list even those near top number of babies given that name is quite low.
2 withsame name in a class of 30 is still ok

I've come across quite a few of these names too. Pretty though! Whereabouts in the country are you?

@triplechocbrownie Probably quite outing given that I’ve listed some of her classmates’ names and it’s a lot more unusual than any of theirs. I’ve mentioned it on other name threads though - fits with the ‘short name ending in a’ trend but lots more consonants/harsher sounding/European influence - very marmite! 🙂

Aldith · 01/04/2023 23:21

Isla
Maya/Maia
Tabitha/Tabby
Rosie various full names same nickname
Isobel various spellings
Lula various full names same nickname

WhatFreshHeckle · 01/04/2023 23:25

In my children's classes there aren't that many repetitions. There might be more than one Emma in a year group. Also quite a few Nathaniels which surprised me. I think there were three in my 5yo's EYFS class.

I used to work in a primary and there were a lot of Ava, Freya, Lilah, Lyra, Isla type names for girls. For boys there were a lot of Noahs and Reubens, usually an Oliver per year group at least as well.

Babies I've met recently have been Elsie x 2 and Teddy

fyn · 01/04/2023 23:29

I have a two year old and a one year old. We know quite a few Ottilie’s, two Lyra’s, a few Emmy’s with a variety of longer names shortened, lots of Evelyn’s and Elsie’s too!
