Drew (girl)

I really love Drew for a girls name. We are due in July and only really like this name for a girl. We don't know the sex. Grandfather is Andrew so it is also after him.

My only reservation is we don't have a feminine sounding surname, so written down as a full name and read, to me sounds like a boys name. I may be overthinking and does it really matter... lots of unisex names around now...

I'm looking for some views? Thanks

It's clearly a boy's name. Short for Andrew. You could use it as a second name, but as a first name will definitely cause confusion.

There's always names like Andrea or Andrina you could have instead.

KirstenBlest · 01/04/2023 10:02

I know 2 Drews, one is short for Andrew and the other is a girl called Drew.

Nimbostratus100 · 01/04/2023 10:04

I agree, lovely name, but make it short for a feminine name, like Andrea

Ichosetheredpill · 01/04/2023 10:06

Drew is definitely a unisex name. If you say female Drew I think of Drew Barrymore, if you say male Drew I think of the huge, grumpy, ex-RAF man I used to work with.

Tellmethespoiler · 01/04/2023 10:07

It’s a boy’s name, short for Andrew. It doesn’t even sound particularly nice. Dru? For Drusilla?

I can only think of Drew Barrymore, who was named after her father -also Drew.

aSofaNearYou · 01/04/2023 10:32

I don't think it's clearly a boy's name anymore because I've never met a boy called Drew and the most famous Drew I can think of is a woman.

I'd go for it.

Spidey66 · 01/04/2023 10:39

I know a male Drew (short for Andrew) but it's a unisex name. It's not held Drew Barrymore back!

Well, no, it wouldn’t. The child in a famous acting family.

WarmButteryCrumpets · 01/04/2023 10:50

I think most people would think first of Drew Barrymore! So I think it actually works better for a girl than a boy!

You could always call her Andrea on the birth certificate

How is Drew similar to Michael?

gerbilcrocus · 01/04/2023 10:58

As in her father, Michael Barrymore.

KirstenBlest · 01/04/2023 11:01

@gerbilcrocus , Drew Barrymore was named after her father, John Drew Barrymore. Michael Barrymore is a british tv presenter.

The only Drew I know is a girl, I think it's cool.

spuddel · 01/04/2023 11:10

I have a Drew (male). Love it as a name for either sex. Go for it!

Look at the calendar 😂

ourflagmeansdeath · 01/04/2023 13:38

It really does seem incredibly masculine to me despite Drew Barrymore etc. It reminds me of this celebrity's daughter called Maxwell Drew which is basically a boys name!!

But I think if you went for it, it would still be lovely, you would just have to correct people a lot. 😊

HappyJellyBaby · 01/04/2023 13:40

I know an Andrewina . . .

EmilyGilmoresSass · 01/04/2023 13:46

I have a masculine first name. When I was younger, I never came across another little girl with my name and got teased often. Now, many years on, my name is quite commonly unisex and it doesn't bother me at all. So ignore all the 'it's definitely a male name'. I actually think Drew for a girl is lovely and far bloody nicer than the girls and boys sharing Jayden, Parker etc.

percypal · 01/04/2023 13:50

I know a female drew I really like it for a girl

RightWhereINeedToBe · 01/04/2023 15:05

I have a 'male' name too and nobody's ever assumed I was a guy now I think about it.

DandelionPockets · 01/04/2023 15:07

Really love Drew as a girl's name. I would go for it if you like it.

I only know Drew as a girl's name - never heard of it for a boy - I am in the states.

It's short for Andrew. Scottish.

@gerbilcrocus , my phone said 31.03.23. My laptop says 01/04/23. That's technology for you.

Strangely enough, I have a clock that sets itself and it always seems to be 3 minutes slow.
