Drew (girl)

I really love Drew for a girls name. We are due in July and only really like this name for a girl. We don't know the sex. Grandfather is Andrew so it is also after him.

My only reservation is we don't have a feminine sounding surname, so written down as a full name and read, to me sounds like a boys name. I may be overthinking and does it really matter... lots of unisex names around now...

I'm looking for some views? Thanks

@KirstenBlest I referenced Francis/Ed because every tine I say there's no such thing as a unisex name someone always says " but what about....."

CurlewKate · 02/04/2023 16:39

@EmilyGilmoresSass could you give some examples of it going "the other way round"? Because I can't think of any!

No such thing as a unisex name. Oh yes-there's one. Frances/is. Apart from that, there are boy's names which are sometimes used for girls.

Frances and Francis are different names -they are not unisex. One is female, the other male, and they are not interchangeable. Just the same as Georgia and George or Alexander and Alexandra. Nothing unisex about them.

Sam, Chris, Pat, Charlie.

Yes, they came from different “full” names for different sexes, but some people now give their kids the shortened form on their birth certificates. Are you saying that a boy and a girl both named Sam on their birth certificate technically have different names? That’s a stretch.

CurlewKate · 02/04/2023 17:02

@Tellmethespoiler As I said a few minutes ago, I referenced Francis/es because whenever I say there are no unisex names, someone always brings it up.

Drew for a girl is absolutely fine. Outside Scotland, I suspect that people are more likely to be aware of Drew Barrymore than to have met a real life male Drew. I also can’t think of any famous male Drews.

I really like it as a girl's name. I'm not sure the surname would impact that opinion either so if you love it, go with it.

Lovely name

Short for Drusilla?

"The oh-so-posh Drusilla is a Roman feminine name with Greek, Latin, and Celtic origins. For the heroic tot with an elegant air, Drusilla means “strong,” “courageous,” and “valiant.” From the Latin Drusus, Drusilla's roots stretch deeper through history to the Old Celtic Drausus."

Personally I don’t like the name Drew for a boy or a girl.
In particular, I think it’s too masculine for a girl, but I tend to like very girlie names.

As in her father, Michael Barrymore.

😆😂
Please tell me you're joking!

It was an April Fool joke.

I hear Drusilla, I think of Spike’s girlfriend.
