Drew (girl)

I really love Drew for a girls name. We are due in July and only really like this name for a girl. We don't know the sex. Grandfather is Andrew so it is also after him.

My only reservation is we don't have a feminine sounding surname, so written down as a full name and read, to me sounds like a boys name. I may be overthinking and does it really matter... lots of unisex names around now...

I'm looking for some views? Thanks

Drew is lovely for a girl, I like unisex names. Don't draw it out to some weird elongated name for the birth certificate just for the sake of it. If you like Drew, call her Drew x

KirstenBlest · 01/04/2023 16:56

I don't particularly like unisex names, but I agree with @AndTheListGoesOn about not using an elongated name just for the sake of it.

villamariavintrapp · 01/04/2023 19:19

I don't like boy's names for girls, think it's sexist as never happens the other way round. And especially wouldn't use Drew which is so heavily associated with one individual.

UsingChangeofName · 01/04/2023 19:29

I don't like giving girls, boys' names - or boys, girls' names in truth, though that seems to happen far less, so it's a no from me.
Drew is short for Andrew, and clearly a boy's name.

Lesley, Stacey, Hilary, Ashley.... I'd say these are all widely accepted as women's names yet they are used for men too.

villamariavintrapp · 01/04/2023 19:50

@AndTheListGoesOn those are all boy's names that are now used by girls. People don't call their sons those names anymore because they're girly, and they see that as a bad thing. Fine for a girl to aspire to masculine qualities, but not the other way round.

KirstenBlest · 01/04/2023 20:01

@AndTheListGoesOn , Lesley is from Leslie, a boy's name. There are lots of Lindsays and different spellings of it my age, but it was a boy's name. As @villamariavintrapp pp, they fall out of use as boys' names.

squidgem · 01/04/2023 20:34

I think Drew is lovely as a girls name. I have met a young girl called Drew, I don't think of it as a boys name at all. It's unisex.

PaigeMatthews · 01/04/2023 20:39

i immediately think of drew barrymore and i just love her. She seems so lovely on anything ive seen her inZ

TheOriginalEmu · 01/04/2023 21:09

My name is Drew! No I’ve has ever thought I was a guy, and I have a masculine first name as a surname too. It’s never hurt me

Agree!

I've always thought that Andi for a girl is quite cool. Although we also have a fairly masculine sounding surname and I appreciate that may not work.

I wanted to call my second baby Stevie if it was a girl (it wasn't and we ended up with a very traditional name) but when I said it aloud with our surname it just reminded me of an old, crude taxi driver.

Ldd89 · 01/04/2023 23:37

My name is Drew and I’m frequently complimented on my name as it’s still quite unusual. Never had any issues in school growing up or being told it was a ‘boys name’. I would go for it, I’ve seen it used recently for a middle name, I know a Lilly Drew and an Ella Drew.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/04/2023 01:07

It’s usually short for Andrew.

I wouldn’t.

CurlewKate · 02/04/2023 01:16

No such thing as a unisex name. Oh yes-there's one. Frances/is. Apart from that, there are boy's names which are sometimes used for girls.

SiobhanSharpe · 02/04/2023 01:20

And when boys' names start being used for girls, they stop being used for boys.
(see Hilary, Ashley, Evelyn etc. )

user1492757084 · 02/04/2023 06:29

Drew has never been a top name for me.

You could go with..
Sandy - Alexandra or Cassandra
or names that stem from Andrew..
Andrea
Andreya
Though the meaing for all Andrew associated names is 'manly and virile'.

theyarereallytakingthepissnow · 02/04/2023 06:30

Lovely, really pretty name

Teeshirt · 02/04/2023 09:49

Drew is a male name. - for Andrew.
Dru is a female name. -for Drusilla.

Yet it is society that deemed them 'boys' names 🙄 you were probably one of the people who teased me for mine as a child ffs. And actually it does happen the other way around.

How is it “society”? St Andrew was male. That’s a fact.

Winterisalmostover · 01/04/2023 09:57

It's clearly a boy's name. Short for Andrew. You could use it as a second name, but as a first name will definitely cause confusion.

There's always names like Andrea or Andrina you could have instead.

Never heard of Drew Barrymore?

KirstenBlest · 02/04/2023 13:31

@CurlewKate , Francis and Frances are two different names and aren't unisex.
Some of the nature names (e.g. Star, Eden, River, Sunny) could be considered unisex, I suppose.

Because I think using traditionally male names on girls is a feminist issue I was a bully as a child? Quite the stretch...

Oblomov23 · 02/04/2023 15:50

Ds1 plays football with a Drew. It's a boys name.
