Thoughts on Jasper

What are your thoughts on Jasper?

Baby is 8 days old and I've been trying it out today and possibly like it.
It's not a name I've ever considered and this is my 3rd boy, but it suits my little one ...... I think.

Any strange associations / nicknames / celebs I need to be aware of?
Are there loads of Jaspers around at the moment?
Do teachers see Jasper on the register and think oh no he's going to be a nightmare / posh / a hippy anything in particular? Lol
Can we see Jasper being a doctor, and a guitar playing surfer and anything else in between that he may choose to be when a man?

And then what could his middle name be?

OP posts:

I like it, but…. My uncle had a dog called Jasper and it makes me think of a very enthusiastic black Labrador.

DalmationCalledStripe · 28/03/2023 21:47

It's very upper class to my ear. I don't think any son of mine could carry it off but if your family is wealthy, private school type thing then yes I think it's nice. Nothing negative associated with it. Congratulations! I think something classic like William would be a nice middle name. Or, if you're not upper class then maybe James or John so you can use JJ as a shortening?

PuppyMonkey · 28/03/2023 21:49

I wanted a Jasper but never had a boy. I love it.

Choconut · 28/03/2023 21:52

I like it - but it's quite posh.

drpet49 · 28/03/2023 21:58

I like it

WithOneLook · 28/03/2023 22:00

Love Jasper.....I had a girl ❤️

Greensleevevssnotnose · 28/03/2023 22:01

When I was a kid Jasper was nickname for wasps. As in Tommy got sting by a Jasper

MammaWeasel · 28/03/2023 22:02

It's what some people call wasps around here, so it makes me think of stripey stingers. Sorry! You did ask!

FluffMagnet · 28/03/2023 22:02

Love it. My best friend has a 4 Yr old Jasper and he is brilliant and a bit nuts.

DevantMaJardin · 28/03/2023 22:03

Carrott. Sorry. You might or might not be too young to remember Jasper Carrott but he was a right twat.

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/03/2023 22:04

My maths Tutor’s husband was Jasper and he was skinny with carrot coloured hair and always wore a jumper. (I’m wondering now if it was a Nn from Jasper Carrot but I doubt it.)

Which is possibly why I’m not keen on it, but as Caspar is getting very popular I don’t see why Jasper shouldn’t. It’s also a nice kind of quartz.

MerryMarigold · 28/03/2023 22:05

I think if dogs or posh people. I think it's a bit of a weasley name for some reason. Someone posh but dodgy, not if a drug dealer.

UndercoverCop · 28/03/2023 22:05

I love it. I've got one, we're not posh both working class backgrounds but now have degrees, work in professional (public sector) jobs etc.
It's uncommon enough for someone to remark when they also have a son called Jasper , and he's never had another in the same class/activity group, but not odd enough for people to not know how to spell it/say it or to pull a funny face.
You will occasionally come across people who have pets called Jasper, more often than not labradors.
It's also not usually shortened if that matters to you.

MumofJasper · 28/03/2023 22:05

Love it
Mine is 12 and we've only met one other!

UndercoverCop · 28/03/2023 22:06

@FluffMagnet I think you know my son 😁

Cantseethewindows · 28/03/2023 22:07

My Jasper is asleep in his cot in the next room! He loves nursery and wants to do everything his big brother does. Big feelings for a little boy! Gorgeous blonde curls and beautiful blue eyes but a crap sleeper😂

I obviously love the name! I agree it has a posh air to it but we needed a name that worked in other languages too. I've come across a few, they're all really young. I agree it is not uncommon as a dog's name, but only one way to change that!

I'm a teacher and have never taught a Jasper yet. J names are notorious though and I do anticipate that parents' evenings for mine will be a bit more "interesting" than for his big brother😅

Butterwicky · 28/03/2023 22:07

Very popular for cats in my experience. Though people here are saying they know dogs called it too.

FLOWER1982 · 28/03/2023 22:09

Not keen sorry.

Greenfairydust · 28/03/2023 22:10

One of my direct reports at work is called Jasper.

I really like that name.

Mine's a bit younger but that's a pretty fitting description😆 current party trick is climbing onto the dining table whilst he's waiting for his pudding🙄

Re middle names: the ones we chose are after a relative and not English, so can't help there.

mumofjasper1 · 28/03/2023 22:16

I have a teenage Jasper. He's not posh but the name suits him.
He gets called Casper a lot. We've only come across 1 or 2 other Jaspers.

Goodread1 · 28/03/2023 22:17

I don't like the name sorry

Reminds me of comedian Jasper Carrott

From back in 80s era

Mischance · 28/03/2023 22:18

It's a rugby song, as in:

"And she lay beneath the lily-white sheets with nothing on at all.

Oh Sir Jasper do not touch!
Oh Sir Jasper do not touch!
Oh Sir Jasper do not touch!"

There is more to it than that of course 😀

JauntyRedShoes · 28/03/2023 22:21

Jasper is a great name, I love it. Quite like Jago too.
