Ned?

We are thinking of Ned for our DS2, but I wouldn't want just Ned.
Is the only option Edward really? I don't like Edmund due to the boy in the lion the witch and the wardrobe !

Doesn't it mean Non Educated Delinquent?

Was about to say this.
I wouldn't go for Ned, definitely not.

Reddahlias · 14/03/2023 19:56

Surely Edward shortens to Ed? I mean it's not Nedward??

ODFOx · 14/03/2023 20:00

Edward shortens to Ed, Ned and Ted.

It's a good name OP.
Congratulations Flowers

katsue · 14/03/2023 20:01

Ned is definitely short for Edward, there are lots of illogical sounding shortenings around from the days when there was a list of about ten names (may be exaggerating) used for boys. Think John/Jack Henry/Harry.

You could use Edwin if you don't like Edward.

vhungrycaterpillar · 14/03/2023 20:08

Ned just reminds me of Ned Flanders from the simpsons... sorry. Edward is nice though.

Thatsnotmyname2047 · 14/03/2023 20:09

Ned is horrible imo, sorry.

Dartmoorcheffy · 14/03/2023 20:10

Dunno why but it makes me think of a donkey or a horse

A neddy is a donkey.

Ned is another name for wasteman

Reddahlias · 14/03/2023 20:12

Edward shortens to Ed, Ned and Ted.

How about some more ideas like Jed, Ked or Fed Grin

I did think that but wasn't sure if that was just local to Lancashire too.

This. Neds are usually seen hanging around swing parks at night, smoking weed, smashing glass bottles and making a complete pest of themselves.

keeponrunning85 · 14/03/2023 20:21

We have an Edward shortened to Ned so clearly I love it.

I had never heard the term non-educated delinquent before opening this thread though 😂

BakingBunty · 14/03/2023 20:21

I have a Ned, and it's just... Ned. Don't like the name Edward (still don't) but loved Ned (still do). I know another Ned short for Benedict. We've never had any negative comments but don't live in Scotland!

keeponrunning85 · 14/03/2023 20:21

Also never had any negative comments

userxx · 14/03/2023 20:24

I will be using the name for my new arrival. The 4 legged variety.

junebirthdaygirl · 14/03/2023 20:25

Ned is a great name. Far better than Ted l think. Could be short for Eddie but Edwin is a good call.

Nimbostratus100 · 14/03/2023 20:25

Ned is a fine affectionate nickname, but he does need a more formal name to use when he wants to. If not Edward, then

How about Edison, Edmund, Eden, Edwin, Edgar, Edmondo, Eduardo, Edric,

Reddahlias · 14/03/2023 19:56

There are a lot of nicknames that are instead rhyming off the obvious nickname. There's a lot of history on this. For example:
Richard - Rick - Dick
William - Will - Bill(y)
Robert - Rob - Bob

mackthepony · 14/03/2023 21:22

I just hear Flanders

user1492757084 · 15/03/2023 05:09

As well as Edward and Edmund there are ...

Benedict
Kennedy
Edgar
Edwin
I like Benedict and Edwin most but why not just use Ned?
One of the funniest films is The Waking of Ned Divine.

😂😂😂😂

DrMarciaFieldstone · 15/03/2023 05:56

Ned is really awful, sorry

JustMaggie · 15/03/2023 07:23

I like Ned, it's a good name. Ned Flanders on the Simpsons wasn't a bad man. He was kind, thoughtful, helpful and he loved his wives. 😃

Loveyoutomatoes · 15/03/2023 07:27

Now I'm suspecting @Reddahlias @SirChenjins and I are from the same area as our meaning of Ned must be a regional thing 😂 if you ask anyone here, they'll tell you what Ned stands for straight away so deffo must be a regional thing. It's interesting as I didn't know that!
