Ned?

We are thinking of Ned for our DS2, but I wouldn't want just Ned.
Is the only option Edward really? I don't like Edmund due to the boy in the lion the witch and the wardrobe !

I wanted Ned from Edmund after my Irish grandpa and a couple of lovely Neds I grew up with, it was one of our two names that we put to the other DCs as we were too tired to decide! Kids chose the other

Doesn't it mean Non Educated Delinquent?

I've never heard this in my life! I know a 14 year old Ned (he's very middle class not that it should matter). Lovely boy. Always thought it was a cool name. Fine to use as a nickname for Edward.

Smileyoriley · 15/03/2023 07:34

Love the name and the longer versions!

LivesinLondon2000 · 15/03/2023 07:37

Love the name Edward shortened to Ed but not so keen on Ned. Our of my neighbours had a donkey called Ned when I was growing up and think there was also a children’s book about a donkey called Ned so can’t get the idea that Ned is a donkey out of my head. But have heard of a couple of babies recently called it so guess it’s becoming popular now

MintTeaAndChocolate · 15/03/2023 08:20

Nooooooooooo!

Now I'm suspecting @Reddahlias @SirChenjins and I are from the same area as our meaning of Ned must be a regional thing 😂 if you ask anyone here, they'll tell you what Ned stands for straight away so deffo must be a regional thing. It's interesting as I didn't know that!

If by regional you mean Scotland, then yes!

I was just about to say if you were from Glasgow there is no way you would name your child Ned!

Dignorantonio · 15/03/2023 08:32

Be aware that in Scotland a ned is a chav. Not saying it’s a nice word or ok to use but it is very much part of Scottish dialect where you might hear someone talk about wee neds in the park or the local neds. It’s what any Scottish person will think when they hear the name.

oneforthemoneytwofortheshow · 15/03/2023 08:39

Ned is a terrible name. Please don't call a child that.

HahahaBoomBoom · 15/03/2023 08:40

Ned in England - go ahead
Ned in Scotland - 😅

TrashyPanda · 15/03/2023 08:43

Ned is definitely a derogatory term in Scotland.

cptartapp · 15/03/2023 08:53

Dreadful. Donkey-like.

purpledalmation · 15/03/2023 09:01

Like a donkey?

LivesinLondon2000 · 15/03/2023 09:03

@purpledalmation
yes ‘Ned the lonely donkey’ - vintage ladybird book but it’s also a sort of traditional name for a donkey - whether that was before or after the book I’m not sure

Toddlerteaplease · 15/03/2023 09:07

Awful, sounds stupid. Someone I know has a son called Benedict, and he's known as Ned.

EyesOnThePies · 15/03/2023 09:08

I like Ned.

But live in the south, I think the ‘delinquent ‘ slang is Scottish? Never heard it used in England.

I’d go for Benedict if you want a longer ‘proper’ name.

SquashPenguin · 15/03/2023 09:12

We call our next door neighbour Ned (not to his face)because he looks exactly like Ned Flanders and he keeps popping his head up over the wall.

Otherwise there is Ned Stark, but I think most people will think of Flanders.

Aerielview · 15/03/2023 09:14

It's a common name for a donkey. I think your son would be teased terribly about it.

Brendabigbaps · 15/03/2023 09:21

I absolutely love the name Ned but it’s a 4 legged creature name

quietnightmare · 15/03/2023 09:24

Eddard

It's such a Donkey's name!

pontipinemum · 15/03/2023 09:38

Interesting that in Scotland it has such a bad meaning!

I think Ned is cute as a nn but like Benedict as a full name.

Smallonesaremorejuicy · 15/03/2023 09:42

Ned the lonely donkey … sad Ladybird book.

TheAustralian · 15/03/2023 09:43

My first thought was of Ned Kelly the famous Australian bush ranger.

I also like Nedward. It has a bit of zip to it 👍🏻

Almahart · 15/03/2023 09:45

Love it and wanted it for my DS but went with a different name in the end
