Thoughts on the name Orton for a boy

Hello!
my partner and I have been pondering over the first name Orton for a boy. I’ve only ever heard it as a last name, and we prefer it to the similar sounding Orson, which is too much like Awesome for us. The only reason I’m not sure is because I’ve never heard or seen it as a first name anywhere, so I’m not sure if people will ‘get’ it or it’s too far left, so really interested to hear your honest thoughts. Does it sound nice or a bit too weird? Thanks!

Weird. I've only ever heard of it as an actual place, and that place was run down and ran by drug dealers also sounds more of a surname sorry!

thymee · 23/02/2023 13:53

I like it, but I think the risk in using made up names is that people will hear it, not quite hear it properly, and relate it to a name that they know is a name.

So I think it will regularly get mistaken for Orson, Horton (as in 'hears a who'!) or even Austin.

thymee · 23/02/2023 13:54

Also Autumn.

I think for me there are too many it could be mistaken for so I'd avoid.

FriedEggChocolate · 23/02/2023 13:55

I live near Leicester, so for me I'd think of the playwright Joe. Perhaps not the role model you'd want to remember (he was killed by a violent partner).

What is it about Orson that you like - it's modern feel, brevity etc. so we can suggest alternatives? It would be easy to spell though, so has that going for it.

prinnycessa · 23/02/2023 13:55

I love it! We plan to use it as a middle name

Paturday · 23/02/2023 13:56

Never heard of it as a name. Makes me think of chipping Norton. I couldn’t be bothered with the comments and questions the name would receive, personally.

MinnieMountain · 23/02/2023 13:57

Don’t use it if you live anywhere near Peterborough. The Ortons are an area there.
Sounds a bit odd to me because of the above.

Rauha · 23/02/2023 13:59

I don't like it

Henddraig · 23/02/2023 14:00

I think you oughtn’t.

HoldingTheDoor · 23/02/2023 14:01

I'm not a fan. Orson is much nicer imo.

SiobhanSharpe · 23/02/2023 14:02

Another "remembering Joe Orton" here. Sad but notorious.
i prefer Orson -- unless your surname is Carter...

Too weird, he’ll spend his life repeating it for people and spelling it.

😀but it’s your choice 👍

Doveyouknow · 23/02/2023 14:13

He will forever explaining no it's not Orsan/Norton/Horton it is O R T O N. As someone who has a name like this it gets old fast...

WednesdaysPlaits · 23/02/2023 14:17

'ears an 'oo

Don't

MrsBunnyEars · 23/02/2023 14:18

It’s fine, but I can’t imagine a scenario in which of all the boys names out there this is the best option.

monitor1 · 23/02/2023 14:19

Would you or your partner like to be called Orton? have to constantly spell your name? please don't do this to your child.

Viviennemary · 23/02/2023 14:19

No. It's dire Is it even a name.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/02/2023 14:20

Orson sounds so much better.

DuchessOfSausage · 23/02/2023 14:22

Prick Up Your Ears film

villamariavintrapp · 23/02/2023 14:25

Like Randy?

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 23/02/2023 14:25

No, it's not a nice name at all.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 23/02/2023 14:28

I've suddenly remembered listening to Beth Orton's Trailer Park album on repeat around 20 years ago, whilst nursing a broken heart.

WineWithAView · 23/02/2023 14:32

Ha, yes came to mention Beth Orton too. Fab singer.

That's the only time I've heard it as a name. Im not sure about it myself. I'm from a northern city and here it would sound like his name was Horton and everyone was dropping the h.

I think Orson is infinitely better as a first name.

shoopshoopdedoo · 23/02/2023 14:39

Not keen, sorry
