Thoughts on the name Orton for a boy

Hello!
my partner and I have been pondering over the first name Orton for a boy. I’ve only ever heard it as a last name, and we prefer it to the similar sounding Orson, which is too much like Awesome for us. The only reason I’m not sure is because I’ve never heard or seen it as a first name anywhere, so I’m not sure if people will ‘get’ it or it’s too far left, so really interested to hear your honest thoughts. Does it sound nice or a bit too weird? Thanks!

No, reminds me of Water Orton train station.

Creepybookworm · 23/02/2023 14:41

Joe Orton. Not a great bloke.

TheNinthLock · 23/02/2023 14:50

Orton ‘ears an ‘Oo?

Scarecrowrowboat · 23/02/2023 14:52

Makes me think of Randy Orton the WWE wrestler.

JessePinkmansgirl · 23/02/2023 14:53

Randy Orton 😍 Are you guys wrestling fans? 😂

It's a pretty area near the River Spey in Scotland. I like the sound of it, but as a first name, I think it would mean a lifetime of spelling it out and having it misheard.

Randy Orton

I think you oughtn’t.

Today's winner of the internet!

I've had to google this Randy Orton. He wears very snug pants. Not like Big Daddy's more respectable unitard.

I like it, but I think the risk in using made up names is that people will hear it, not quite hear it properly, and relate it to a name that they know is a name.

So I think it will regularly get mistaken for Orson, Horton (as in 'hears a who'!) or even Austin.

Yes this is my exact thoughts, can imagine it being very annoying for the little man

I live near Leicester, so for me I'd think of the playwright Joe. Perhaps not the role model you'd want to remember (he was killed by a violent partner).

What is it about Orson that you like - it's modern feel, brevity etc. so we can suggest alternatives? It would be easy to spell though, so has that going for it.

weirdly I’m not sure if I like Orson 🤔 I think it sounds like Awesome far too much. We’re really struggling with boys names, others we like are Theodore, Oscar, Rowan and Rory but can’t help think Oscar and Theodore are a bit popular and Rory sounds like a nickname. Any suggestions are very welcome! Why are girls names so much easier🙈

I used to know an Auden, sounds very similar but looks nicer when written down?

I love it! We plan to use it as a middle name

Hmm maybe a middle name is a better option!

Showing your age, there! 😉😂

mickeysmug · 23/02/2023 16:15

It reminds me of an Australia hand bag brand.

Supernova23 · 23/02/2023 16:38

It sounds awful, sorry. It's not a name. It sounds like a town or a river. Orton-upon-Tyne.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 23/02/2023 16:41

It's absolutely hideous

Some god like hunks, like Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Will from The Repair Shop,...and Big Daddy, transcend the generations.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 23/02/2023 17:59

It's a no from me. If a name needs it eed to be 'explained' in any way, it's a bad sign

icefishing · 23/02/2023 18:01

I really like your other name choices OP.

SallyWD · 23/02/2023 18:04

I'm not a fan of having surnames as first names.

MelMei · 23/02/2023 18:17

Orton, not my favourite. But if you like it, its your choice honey.
How does Omouri sound? If it should be with an O. I remember this Name because it had such soft sound spoken
It was in the movie Lorenzo oil with Nick Nolte and the African Young men was called Omouri,or Omari they both gave a soft sound when spoken.
But most importantly is to think is your later ok with this name.
Best wishes ❤️

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/02/2023 20:20

I’d probably assume it was after Joe or Beth, odd though that would be.

It’s ok but will get misheard as Orson and Autumn a lot, which will be a pain for him.

Overall I wouldn’t
