Baby name update - (Alpha)

This is an update post to the baby name thread I started a few weeks ago deciding whether or not to use the name Alpha for my DD (due March).
If you haven't already read the post, to sum up:
My grandfather Alfie passed just before we found out we are expecting my DD and I wanted to use the name Alpha to honour his name.

There were many mixed opinions but we have settled (DH and I) on the name Alfa.

Its spelling isn't the same as the version with all the bad connotations and I think using the f instead of ph is closer to Alfie anyway so this seemed like the best name we could find. DH is fully on board with the name and we plan to use the nickname Alf too which I think is so cute!

Poor child. He will choose to be Alfie by the time he's about 8.

Also Alfa makes me think of the Little Rascals character Alfalfa.

villamariavintrapp · 28/01/2023 21:33

Ok then

xJoyPeaceHealthx · 28/01/2023 21:34

What if he's shy ?

YourWinter · 28/01/2023 21:34

Alfa is the name for alfalfa horse feed. Poor child. Can’t you use Freda, even al a middle name?

Eixample · 28/01/2023 21:35

How are people missing that it’s a name for a girl?

ThewaytoAmarula · 28/01/2023 21:35

The op said it was for a girl. It makes me think of alfalfa sprouts.

She* and in our opinion it's a nice and unique name

You’re going to name your daughter Alf?!

This is the hormones talking. Please, think this one over again

Luredbyapomegranate · 28/01/2023 21:38

I wouldn’t. Spelling it Alfa doesn’t make it any better, will just make people think of the car.

Why on earth can’t you call her Alfreda? Or just Freda.

It’s not on OP. Your daughter is a person in her own right, I’m sorry you lost your Dad, but you can’t let the fact you are mourning him drive you to inflict a daft name on her that she will have to live with for the rest of her life. Brutally she will never know him, and she won’t thank you. If you must, use it as a middle name.

I like Alf / Alfa for a girl! It's cute and has a nice meaning behind it. You don't need to explain it / validate it on here. Enjoy your baby girl!

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 28/01/2023 21:39

The update nobody wanted.

🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ Oh dear.

I'm usually a bit Confused on name threads - but, I like it!
Middle name?

Sleepyquest · 28/01/2023 21:42

Have you considered just Alfie? So many girls are being given traditionally male names (Rory, James, Teddy) you could just really mix things up and call her Alfie. I think it's better than Alpha personally

YahYahadahling · 28/01/2023 21:42

Could go with Alfonsa or Alfonsina that's an actual name. Not a nice name in my opinion but an improvement.

SalviaOfficinalis · 28/01/2023 21:42

I really think you should reconsider OP. A middle name would be a nice tribute.

I understand that it’s important to you to honour your grandfather, but it does seem unfair to saddle a baby girl with an unfortunate name for the rest of her life in tribute to her late great grandfather.

Wolfiefan · 28/01/2023 21:45

Agree with Salvia.

Twinklenoseblows · 28/01/2023 21:45

I don't think changing the spelling takes away the negative connotations at all because those are based on hearing it, not seeing it written down. Now you're giving the poor kid a name with negative connotations plus a name that no-one will be able to spell so they will spend their life correcting it.

Janedoe82 · 28/01/2023 21:45

Sorry it is woeful. Setting her up for a life of being the child with the weird name.

HollyHocks13 · 28/01/2023 21:45

How about Alva or Alba which are both actual names (and really pretty I think)?

I'm afraid that Alfa reminds me of Alfafa sprouts as someone else said.

Squamata · 28/01/2023 21:45

Alfreda?

Isn't alfa a camera brand?

Squamata · 28/01/2023 21:47

Agfa is the film!

Alfa is Alfa Romeo

Redjumperoo · 28/01/2023 21:47

As in Alf Stewart?

This is starting to look like a pile on but honestly your last thread got a lot of responses and most were advising against it. At the end of the day it's your choice but you have asked for opinions and are just plowing ahead regardless with a name the majority think is unfair to the child.

Reindear · 28/01/2023 21:49

Alfa is awful sorry op. It seems to mean to saddle her with this name because you’re grieving. I have a dreadful middle name due to grieving family members and that’s bad enough but Alfa is a whole new ball game.
Allie would be better or
ophelia
Freda
Fia
Phoebe
