This is an update post to the baby name thread I started a few weeks ago deciding whether or not to use the name Alpha for my DD (due March).
If you haven't already read the post, to sum up:
My grandfather Alfie passed just before we found out we are expecting my DD and I wanted to use the name Alpha to honour his name.

There were many mixed opinions but we have settled (DH and I) on the name Alfa.

Its spelling isn't the same as the version with all the bad connotations and I think using the f instead of ph is closer to Alfie anyway so this seemed like the best name we could find. DH is fully on board with the name and we plan to use the nickname Alf too which I think is so cute!

Alfa is a Muslim girls name, so not that unusual. I know couple of Alfa's - not British so it sounds a bit different to how an English speaker would pronounce it.

In the minority but I like this name. I think it’s pretty cute. I do however think Alfy or Alfi would work as a more feminine approach to Alfie?

I have an unusual name… especially for the year I was born. People always question me on it, it’s a talking point. Disliked it as a child but have grown to value and love it. For my own child - born last year. I did go for a more common name that was easier to pronounce.
if you love this name, see if it suits her and go for it!

Not sure if anyone’s suggested this, but there is an Elfie at DD school, and an old school friend had an Elvie. The latter might be a stretch but Elfie might work?

Also Fia / Fifi ?

Doodleboodle · 30/01/2023 21:36

I like it! Go for it.

@goingoinggonee Don't trust everything you read on the internet 🙄

I knew a girl called Alpha, she was really nice and I never thought anything of her name other than that it was cool 🤷 so I don't really see any negative connotations personally
