To be surprised at friends/family’s baby names

Anyone else been surprised at what people in their lives have called their children?

Not really. People name their kids what they like, not what I like. Luckily I’ve had my own kids so named them the names I like. Mostly I just say ‘aww that’s a lovely name’ or ‘it really suits him/her’ and move on.

A couple, not because they’re terrible names really, I’d have just expected more classic, less lightweight trendy name choices.

I know of someone with twin Gemini boys who named them Castor and Pollux.

All I think is that castor oil helps you poo and Pollux sounds dangerously close to pillock.

With what you said about trendy friends choosing very popular run of the mill names though - I notice this a lot with people who aren’t around many small children. I work in nurseries and I’m always hearing people say they picked the name x (say Albert or Margot) because they don’t just want their child to be another Alex or Megan or Chloe or Darren. I feel like people sometimes pick names that would have been unusual when they were young without realising they’re actually very very popular nowadays!

I know of someone who’s kid is called Mangolisco pretty sure that’s how she spells it - it’s a friend of a friend so I can’t really ask why /

I can’t work out if it’s made up or real name but just why would you do that to a real life living breathing person 😂😂 I wouldn’t even call my dog that and he’s a complete knobhead

although I think there is football player with the same name so maybe that’s where it comes from

Yes we had a family member saying they chose unusual names as why would you want to use a common name that's in the top 50. One of their names has actually really risen in popularity and is also used for both sexes which hasn't gone down well!

DD1 is actually the only one in her school with her name despite it being well known - precios v high and top 30 now probs? I said I don't care about popularity if I like the name.

I don’t mind popular names either though. They’re usually popular for a reason - because they’re nice! One of my kids has quite a popular name which is made much more popular because there are two versions of it (something like Eva/Evie) but realistically we don’t meet too many of them. It’s not like she’s one of 12 in her class or anything. The worst that happens is that sometimes she is ‘Eva J.’

IME, it’s the teachers who have the “out there” names as they try and go for a name they’ve never taught. This is what my friends logic was anyway. Her childrens names are definitely, erm, unique.

Definitely this. My colleague (in her fifties) was recently telling us about her new great niece Amelia, and that she has a lovely unusual name!
