Anyone else been surprised at what people in their lives have called their children?

There was an indie act in the early 2000s called Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. I would have a lot of fun with nicknames for that poor kid.

I saw them live in June of this year.

Merlin. Grin I can't help but see a hobbit man with long white beard.

All her life she's going to be asked if that's where she was conceived.

It was my first thought :)

Family member wanted Able for 2nd child, first child severely disabled, luckily they decided against it.

My sisters was totally left field and something Mumsnet would hate. It suits baby though and I love it now.

Will it suit the adult that they will spend 70-odd years of their life as though?

I've heard a, shall we say, questionable one this week - does anyone remember a BT advertising character from the 80s - before even Maureen Lipman and the 'ology'? Well that plus a weather phenomena. Not that I can talk, I have the Gaelic version of one of the names mentioned here.

AmandaMirandaPanda · 08/01/2023 20:47

I wonder if Cape is meant to be a nature name, like Bay, Innes, River, etc? I know a couple who had Cove at the top of their list for boys but didn't use it because COVID became a big thing before the baby was born.

Speaking of articles of clothing, I recently embarrassed myself by objecting to a character in a Mexican sitcom being named Poncho (not Pancho), but apparently it is a trad diminutive of Alonso.

@Reugny yes, I am familiar...

This family are not Italian or speak the language. They overheard it on holiday but also didn't researched it. When they announced it to all of their British family and friends, there was a very mixed response.

And I did not criticize. But when I chose my DC's name I did check the context of their names in English but also the language of our host country. Plus initials, google the full name for context as well as considering initials. I thought this was entirely normal. Clearly not.

Why would you criticise? The name Dante doesn’t have negative connotations…

As a previous poster has said, the most well known Dante was a celebrated author and poet.

Twins Ronnie and Reggie. First thought? They must be Kray ze😂

pollyglot · 08/01/2023 20:49

Yes one of the children in the family has a ridiculous name, hes named after an item of clothing. I feel sorry for him as all the other kids in the family have normal names even his brother. When I've mentioned his name in passing to people always ask me to repeat the name.

Merkin?

It was my first thought :)

Douglas Adams had a character called Fenchurch in The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy - conceived in the ticket queue at Fenchurch Street Station. He was well ahead of his time.

Darn! You got there before me. I’ll go for Busby Rain instead.

Puzzles85 · 08/01/2023 20:53

A little girl called Navy. Have got used to it, but I did think it was a bit out there!

Runnerduck34 · 08/01/2023 20:55

Yes a friend called her child by an outlandish first name from Shakespeare- he's now a teen and goes by his normal boring middle name.
Another friend gave her DD what I would call an old lady nana name, this was 20 years ago and its now popular so I guess she was ahead of the game!

SpottyBalloons · 08/01/2023 20:56

@StrawberryAnnie I take it you haven't heard of Dante's Inferno!

Herejustforthisone · 08/01/2023 20:56

So it’s Cape? When I heard ‘begins with C, something you wear around your neck’, I was a bit worried it was Crucifix. 😬

Bloatstoat · 08/01/2023 20:57

My cousin has called her two children names with only one letter different (think e.g. Lana and Lena) they're both ok names but it just seems weird with them both having pretty much the same name.

LuckeyBuoy · 08/01/2023 21:01

I thought Luckey Buoy was a bit shit, but otherwise no objections.

Was it Henry IV?

urrrgh46 · 08/01/2023 21:01

Yes I have a friend who has done this. Pretty names but they must really have liked them!
