Anyone else been surprised at what people in their lives have called their children?

Same family, three children, Dollar, Cash and Cent...bloody ridiculous

The family I know called their sons Cage and Cash.

I've never heard of either, young or old! They live in the North of England in case that's relevant at all.

Mona. I keep thinking ‘How could you?’

Trumpton · 08/01/2023 21:35

Gnatalie. True fact. Friend of my DS.

Axolot · 08/01/2023 21:36

Oh yes - Dashiel raised my eyebrows involuntarily. As did "Cameron" in a family where the elder three children have very classic names and it just didn't fit!

Reugny · 08/01/2023 21:37

@purpletowelette I was told on a thread on here that it was weird to check your child's name in other languages, check initials etc and make sure it wasn't associated with a criminal.

Yes. 'Griffin' was misjudged, in my opinion, but of course I'm keeping it to myself!

Oh no why is Griffin misjudged? This is high on our list for a boy, now second guessing

Paul?

Colin, Philip, Ian, Leslie Steven, Peter, Simon or David would be my bet. Nice solid British names but not the least bit fashionable these days.

Was Cameron for a girl and that is why it raised eyebrows? It is very much a classic boy’s name in Scotland.

Yes a friend called her child by an outlandish first name from Shakespeare- he's now a teen and goes by his normal boring middle name.
Another friend gave her DD what I would call an old lady nana name, this was 20 years ago and its now popular so I guess she was ahead of the game!

Caliban? Dogberry? Banquo? Bottom?

I'm desperate to know now, @Runnerduck34 !

I know of someone with twin Gemini boys who named them Castor and Pollux.

All I think is that castor oil helps you poo and Pollux sounds dangerously close to pillock.

Astronomers or big fans of the movie Face/Off?

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 08/01/2023 21:42

I know someone who named their daughter Bradley (but spelled Bradleigh).
I still cant wrap my head around why they would choose this for a girl.

@PollyAmour Im a little bit sad it wasn’t baby Crucifix to be honest 🤣🤣

If the next one was a girl, she could have been Rosary.

Merlin. Grin I can't help but see a hobbit man with long white beard.

My husband wanted to use Merlin- after the spitfire engine! He wasn't allowed!!

ShinyPikachu · 08/01/2023 21:48

I know a Khaleesi and a Renesmee. I find naming after characters interesting anyway but when it's such an unusual one it really stands out.

Yikes, that’s embarrassing for the parents. Bad choices.

SSam1990 · 08/01/2023 21:51

‘Ocie-Mai’ …. Definitely uhh…. Unusual

katseyes7 · 08/01/2023 21:51

I know someone who called their daughter Chynna. (As in Chynna Phillips)
Then had to keep explaining to people that it was pronounced 'china' and not 'chinner'.

NoisyBrain · 08/01/2023 21:52

When I was at uni one of my housemates had two friends in his circle called Merlin and Jesus. I suspect Jesus was pronounced 'Hay-zooss' but I still love the mental image that duo conjured up 😂

katseyes7 · 08/01/2023 21:52

My sister in law's a teacher, and she had a 'Sharlit' in her class years ago. Not so much an unusual name as crap or inventive spelling. She said she thought they liked the sound of it, but didn't know how to spell it.

I once had a colleague whose name was Merlin. He would have been born approx 1960.

I know an Oak, which I wasn’t keen on at first.

Please tell me it didn't grow on you.

PermanentTemporary · 08/01/2023 21:56

I've recently heard of two tiny Raymonds so clearly that one is back.

Not keen on it, but I remember when my mum thought my friend calling her son Isaac was incredibly out there and couldn't believe I knew 4 baby Isaacs 😁

@LuckeyBuoy 😂😂😂

Cakecakecheese · 08/01/2023 21:58

Havana
Cairo

Some people were surprised that I gave my son a very traditional name and not something more unusual, I'm clearly less interesting than they thought I was 😂
