Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

I feel like the Mae or Rose etc names double barreled onto first names is going way too far these days. A single stand alone first name is sufficient.

Don’t worry, I will be able to sleep tonight knowing that some people may not have read Shakespeare’s entire back catalogue

but seeing as this is a thread about names that we don’t like- I don’t like it when people lumber their children with frilly, opulent names because they look a bit fancy when they clearly haven’t even bothered to look into the connotations of said name

ophelia is a tragic character. She is sweet and goodhearted, but mistreated, descends into madness and likely commits suicide. I couldn’t imagine knowing her story and thinking ‘ah! What a lovely name to give my beautiful new DD’

that was the point I was making. It was quite clear, but if you want to pretend it’s hysterical middle class panic so you can ‘FFS’ on a message board, then whatever makes you feel good, I guess

OK I'll bite. My daughter is named Ophelia and I am an English graduate who has read, studied and seen Hamlet. I understand her character to be tragic but loved the name. Nobody bats an eyelid when people call their daughter Juliet. Or any of the other tragic female characters from literature such as Tess for example but for some reason the name Ophelia gets a lot of hate on Mumsnet. To be honest I don't care as it's a beautiful name that suits my daughter perfectly and I can be happy in the knowledge that the people slating it know less about the name's origins and the character herself yet love to appear superior by assuming I don't.

Kayleigh/Keeley/Kelly.

nicslackey · 02/01/2023 08:29

Joanne

Mumofgirls2017 · 02/01/2023 08:30

I really can’t stand Noah for a boy and Ellie for a girl. Zero rationale as they are both v popular!

midnightfirework · 02/01/2023 08:31

Wren
Milo

tweedlee · 02/01/2023 08:32

Dylan. Ugh.

BBK2121 · 02/01/2023 08:34

Nevaeh is awful but worse than that are any names that are spelt crazily - such as Taelah (Taylor) or Stawm (Storm).

amitoooldforthisshit · 02/01/2023 08:34

Anything Irish, oft I find the concoctions of letters for some of the names look bizzare on a sheet of paper.

@Orphlids I've never been able to take the name Persephone seriously since a family member misread it on a pub quiz card as "Percy-phone"...

I was just wondering how it was pronounced as I'd never heard anyone called percy-phone

cptartapp · 02/01/2023 08:35

Noah.
Sounds like a strained protest.
Or anything ending in ie.

savethatkitty · 02/01/2023 08:35

Oliver (Ollie)

ByTheSea · 02/01/2023 08:40

I don't like names with the 'th' sound, e.g. Seth, Ethan, Nathan, Heather, etc.

MoreBriePlease · 02/01/2023 08:41

Jayden/Kayden/Brayden etc appear on these threads all the time.

Do people realise Jayden is a ‘real’ name? The spelling has been mangled over the years but I’m certain it originates from the bible.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 02/01/2023 08:42

Taylor for boy or girls is just awful I hate it
Also don't like Isaac or Noah
Layla is Chavy cant stand it
Amelia is awful
Jack is boring and overused it's not even a name anymore

@Wombat100

what was the purpose of starting this thread, it's only going to hurt people who have children with these names?

it's not going to narrow down naming options fir anyone.

it just seems unkind.

Any one who’s “hurt” because some randomer on mumsnet doesn’t like the name they chose needs to grow a thicker skin PDQ cos they’ll never survive in the real world with their hurty feelz.

QuiltedHippo · 02/01/2023 08:49

Eleanor- I hate it and I don't know why, people say it's elegant but it feels so dowdy to me

Jayden/cayden/brayden

Just can't stand them

Yes this☝️
With bells on

Same with Kyle/ Lyle/ Jyle.

I also loathe the name Callum and I always have for some reason.

Bosk · 02/01/2023 08:54

I quite like the name Ophelia (and for maximum snob points would point out that Shakespeare is for watching, not reading) but it always reminds me of the well-known Russian ballerina Ophelia Titz...

RobinRobinMouse · 02/01/2023 08:55

I dont like Kai or Isla as names very much, they just aren't my style. I like old people names though, which can also be love or hate for others.

AChristmasCaro · 02/01/2023 08:56

Not a name so much as a way of naming- I don’t like any names which are more about the parent than the child, eg naming your child after a singer they’ve never heard of and might not like (Dylan, Lennon, Hendrix etc). It’s like when people put their baby in a Ramones T-shirt, a sort of failure to grasp that he or she is a separate person rather than an outlet for you to express yourself (although at least you can take a T-shirt off).

thegreylady · 02/01/2023 08:57

The only girl’s name I truly dislike is my own.
For boys I am glad the Cecil, Cyril, Claude set hasn’t made a comeback though Cecilia and Claudette are ok.

ladygindiva · 02/01/2023 09:01
