Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

Flora is also bad (margarine). And Felix (cat food). And anything blatantly from a film or book (GofT, LOTR etc).

Daisybuttercup12345 · 05/03/2023 01:08

Mildred and Percy

AllyCatTown · 06/03/2023 07:12

Tabitha - I think it’s fine as a cat’s name but not for a woman. I dislike names that designate class and this is one.

Elana / Alannah / Lana / Ana
Marlowe / Harlow
Chanette
Melanie
Bertie
Manny
Lindsay
Hannah
Nicholas
Cameron
Chad
Jaymie
Kit
Codi
Nellie
Charlotte
Elspeth
Bobby
Roana

That’s a lot of names for one name you dislike 😁 There’s some perfectly nice names on there but it is such a subjective topic.

I don't have any strong feelings on the name but I know three adult Tabithas and they all absolutely hate their name. I've never known a name to provoke such a strong reaction in the person who owns it.

Nicholas - it sets my teeth on edge but can't explain why.

Also anything excessively frilly for girls. Arabella, Ottilie, Seraphina etc etc. I immediately think pony clubs and characters in Enid Blyton school stories.

Always sounds too much like knickerless to me.

I really hate my name but wouldn’t mind being called Tabitha. It sounds very feline and I envisage Tabithas as having good cheekbones and being very attractive. It’s a name I’d feel would stop me slobbing about in my dressing gown 😁 It would raise my game and I’d completely ‘own’ it. My own name on the other hand has always made me envisage kids with snotty noses and socks that don’t stay up.

and for a boy Arthur. Never liked it, sounds old and flabby.

I can’t hear Arthur without thinking of arthritis, unfortunately.

DD’s name has been included on this thread (or rather the category it falls into has) and whilst I disagree with the criticism given, I’m not offended.

One of mine has their name here as well but I don’t mind. They’re not that keen on it either unfortunately. They don’t like their (very popular) middle name so getting a new moniker they feel is them hasn’t been easy. Shame really as I hate my name so empathise and wish I’d given them more than one middle name now.

I know a(n older) child Tabitha, who loves her name.
She's known as Tabby day to day and really ramps up the feline - Alice bands with cat ears, etc.

Rahrahrahraah · 06/03/2023 23:34

Henry

Makes me think of the wife murdering King, and "horrid".

f678d886 · 07/03/2023 23:04

Dulcie or Dolcie is probably my least favourite name, too twee and the "dull" syllable stands out to me. I dislike a lot of names with the same ending sound actually, like Nancy, Elsie, Betsy, Darcie. Too cutesy.

For a boy, I think Spurgeon is probably the worst name I've heard.

Squirrelsnut · 08/03/2023 12:22

Alma.
Enid Blyton obviously disliked it too - wasn't there a 'stodgy, dull' Alma at Malory Towers or St Clare's?

Squirrelsnut · 08/03/2023 12:22

Alma Pudden!

Mesopotami · 08/03/2023 16:27

Dorcas anyone?

choochooandspook · 08/03/2023 20:02

Ada or Ida sound like old women in pinnies gossiping in the street, reminds me of a Les Dawson comedy sketch.

AlwaysLatte · 08/03/2023 20:05

I heard 'Harper!' being shrieked in the supermarket the other day. There's one for me (especially said like that).

I dislike Harper, but also Piper which (to me at least) is the same sort of name, and even more awful.
I just imagine a little girl playing a huge set of bagpipes; either that or doing plumbing, both of which activities should really be done by a manly man.
At least playing the harp is slightly better.

Any girls name with a hyphenated May/Mae
Evie/Evelyn
Neveah

Jaxon
Lewis
All the Jayden/Kaydens etc

LeChatChat · 10/03/2023 19:30

Abigail - makes me think of angry Puritans
Jaxon - nope. Jackson is fine, but why spell it with an x?

PurpleFlower1983 · 10/03/2023 19:41

Caroline

I see your Jaxon, which is at least phonetically plausible, and raise you Jaxson, which has somehow become the 135th most popular boys’ name in the country. 421 of them named in 2021!

But she came into her own when she and Mean Elsie were joint Form Leaders.
