Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

Yes never understood the massive popularity of Amelia. There are so many lovely under used proper names out there.

I heard the name “Star” today. Ugh! 🤢

Im also not a fan of Jack, Amelie, Brandon, or any “old” names that are becoming popular especially Amelia!

My friends grandmother was called Amelia, back in the 1970’s. She was not a typical, loving grandmother. That name always makes me shudder when I hear it 🥺

I would have agreed with Star but I’ve recently come across a gorgeous young figure skater called Starr Andrews and now I don’t hate the name. Association can really affect the way a person sees a name (negative or positively) and Starr is a star 😊

I have a weird dislike for Roberta, Philippa, Josephine…names which I perceive as female versions of male names (although that might be entirely incorrect).
Goes without saying that that’s just my personal taste and these are absolutely reasonable names.

Aldith · 26/02/2023 19:29

Trinity and Angel make me shudder due to real life associations.

Star was going to be my future baby’s name when I was a child 😂 I don’t know where I picked it up but I remember it being a favourite for a few years.

Anything spelt wrong or with a hyphen mae/may/rose. Any surname names. Made up names. Jessica. Isobel/Isabelle/variations- is a bell necessary on a bike? Jack. Alice- a lice. Joanne (don’t mind Joanna). Old man names. Nicknames as proper names- Alfie, Archie, pixie, Ellie, bunny, Lulu, jonty. Obviously the chavvy choices Jayden, Kai, Tyson etc.

WhamBamEatYourSpam · 26/02/2023 21:37

Thomas, Jacob, Sebastian. Awfully wet, beige names that scream "I'm a white, middle-class child".

For a girl Aurelia (sounds completely pretentious) and Charlotte (because it's unimaginative and dull).

Ultravox · 26/02/2023 22:15

Edna. You don’t get many of them these days but it’s just horrible and reminds me of Evil Edna from Willo The Wisp and our old racist neighbour.

user1492757084 · 28/02/2023 01:00

Violet. Always reminds me of violent.
Baeden/Jayden. Too popular.

I don’t particular like these names either (don’t mind Phillipa so much) but Roberta and Josephine don’t sound pleasant to me, Josephine always makes me think of uptight parents for some reason. I’d add Geraldine as well (feminine Gerald perhaps?).

Anything you have to ask how to pronounce or spell - if you're asking guaranteed your poor child will hate you for picking such a stupid name they have to explain everytime.

Place names London, Brooklyn, Lincoln

Girls names like Willow and anything ending in bella/belle

Quite intolerant to assume the child must have a name common to the dominant culture they're living in - it's almost like you think everyone who isn't white and from Wigan is named wrong.

What about Irish parents who decide to move somewhere else in the world? Or English parents emigrating for that matter?

People's spelling is often so bad now (my own included) that a lot of people would spell Sidney as Sidnee or Felix as Felicks anyway. You can't get a common enough name for everyone to spell without massive repetition.

Cuppasoupmonster · 02/03/2023 14:17

How on Earth did you get that from that @Forthelast

Abundantly clear she meant names deliberately spelt stupidly not names from other cultures

She said anything you have to ask how to spell or pronounce!! Pretty obvious it covers anything!

Forthelast · 02/03/2023 17:13

And I'm not sure anyone spells names stupidly. Spelling is evolving constantly.

Anything double barrelled (surnames as well as first names)

Scotskynon · 02/03/2023 20:35

As @Cuppasoupmonster said how did you get that from what I said??? 😂

To clarify what I meant to you, if you need to know how a name is pronounced or spelt, why would you give your child that name?

And to be clear, if the name is from your cultural background then it's not a stupid name.

Spell it properly - stupid spellings just to be unique, are exactly that stupid!

@Forthelast

In case you haven't noticed, Britain is a diverse melting pot of cultures. There is no chance of having a name that everyone will be able to spell. You speak as though cultures are distinct, immiscible and unrelated. Our world isn't like that so you should get used to it.

Reddahlias · 02/03/2023 21:21

The name Catherine/Katharine/Kathryn has to be spelled out, as does Clare/Claire and Finley/Finlay etc etc You might still like the name though?!

Newnamenewname109870 · 02/03/2023 21:30

Names that are really boring like Isobel, Emily and Sophie (I knew so, so many growing up and I can’t understand why people my age are still using them).

I think the mumsnet obsession with Christopher (nn Kit), Theo and Elizabeth put me right off.

I knew a Geraldine whose dad was called... Yes, Gerald. Both lovely people but both bloody awful names!
