Just out of interest really - is there a specific boy or girl name you just can’t stand?

Aw, not enjoying the Oscar hate .. the one I know is 63 and exceptionally wonderful in every way ❤️!

The names I can't stand are Imogen (so ugly...sounds like engine oil or an electricity company - ImoGEN),
and for a boy Arthur. Never liked it, sounds old and flabby.

Persephone. Actually, I quite like this name, but there was a little Persephone at a toddler class the other week whose mother was just constantly and unnecessary calling her name in a loud voice, and each time, she’d have a quick scan around the room to make sure the rest of us plebs had noticed what a superior name she’d chosen for her kid. By the end of the half hour, the name was forever ruined.

Similarly, it’s the name Georgiana for me. My daughter went to a weekly class with a Georgiana who, not particularly surprisingly, was sometimes accidentally called Georgina by the class leader.

Every single time her mum - who had one of those loud authoritative-sounding posh voices - would say “It’s Georgi-Ah-Na actually”

Well if he's 63, I'd imagine he's not being dragged round a supermarket throwing things off the shelves whilst a meak, middle class woman whines "stop doing that Oscar"

Tell her it's Jor-jay-nah. Actually. Shove that up her muff and smoke it!

Any boring names like Lauren, Jack, Emma,
Any flower names Lily, Daisy, Violet
Anything obviously religious for boys Gabriel, Noah,

Anything pretentious sounding Rupert, Tarquin, Tristan, Phillipa, Olivia.

adognamedrover · 25/02/2023 16:12

Amelia is horrible sounding.
Esme is awful. Pronounced Es-May it's lovely though!
Harper. All the Harpers I've met are bullies.
And newborn babies being called Middle aged mens names, like Peter, Michael, David, Andrew. Perfectly fine on a 40 year old, but horrendous on a baby.

adognamedrover · 25/02/2023 16:13

Oh and how could I forget Aurelia?
Reminds me of a nipple (areola)

CockleburIck · 25/02/2023 16:20

@Comedycook a bit less often now than he used to, at least.

Oh god, me too. Having struggled with BF the word areola is tattooed on my brain. It's just what I think of when I see/hear the name Aurelia.

I forgot about Elodie. Not only do you have to put on a silly french accent to say it properly, it also sounds like elodia, which is pond weed.

bellarosabella · 25/02/2023 16:37

Stevie because it somehow reminds me of "stinky".

CellophaneFlower · 25/02/2023 17:25

@Simplepink 😂 I thought exactly the same about my 3 boy's names! 1 is not that common and a bit marmite, 1 is a unisex name more common in girls in UK and the other is still quite uncommon 25 years on, but there are a few more around now, although there are a few spellings of it and I've never seen it spelt like his before (quite aware this makes it sound chavvy, but it's not!).

SquashPenguin · 25/02/2023 17:40

Teddy
Mae
Arthur/ Alfie/ Archie
Esme

kidsatuniemptynester · 25/02/2023 17:46

I have a big problem with people who love the sound of Irish names, but then don't bother their arse to find out how to spell them correctly. I am looking at you, Mother of Shevawn and Sharn.

kidsatuniemptynester · 25/02/2023 17:50

It also is to do with name association, I am ancient, therefore appalled at any girl being named Olive, as in the whiny, downtrodden wife in On The Buses. Same with Ben, I wasn't going to call my son after daft Benny from Crossroads.

kidsatuniemptynester · 25/02/2023 17:58

Names which are just initials; TC, TJ etc. I see a dad in dodgy grey tracksuit who won't hang around long

Viviennemary · 25/02/2023 18:15

Toby. Its just awful. Dont know why.

No! Ben is a huge gentle bear with a very irritating blonde pal 😂

DollyDoofer · 25/02/2023 23:47

I heard the name “Star” today. Ugh! 🤢

Im also not a fan of Jack, Amelie, Brandon, or any “old” names that are becoming popular especially Amelia!

My friends grandmother was called Amelia, back in the 1970’s. She was not a typical, loving grandmother. That name always makes me shudder when I hear it 🥺

TheaBrandt · 26/02/2023 09:04

i don’t like boring over used names. They are so run of the mill. Eve/Lily/Olivia/ Grace yawn yawn yawn. Eve/Evie has got ridiculous. The name Eve and all its Eva/Evie variants should be officially declared full.

aoibhacado · 26/02/2023 10:58

girls:
fucking bethany. no idea why, just HATE it.

boys:
cruz
any "ayden" name, eg. jayden, brayden

neutral:
unpopular opinion but bodhi

aoibhacado · 26/02/2023 10:59

also, jack, junior, most J boy names

MrsAvocet · 26/02/2023 11:05

Nigel.
Which unfortunately is DH's best friend's name. He's really nice, but I still hate the name.
It's just such an ugly sound.

Comedycook · 26/02/2023 11:38

Really dislike Harriet and Imogen...both so clunky sounding.

Arlo....just what?! Will date so badly

Shayisgreat · 26/02/2023 11:40

Arlo, Archie, and Amelia. I just don't like the sound of them.

CockleburIck · 26/02/2023 12:54

I forgot about some names that seemed to have been MN popular in the last couple of years, but that made me cringe:

Willa
Calliope
James for a girl (great for a boy!)

Yuck.

Amelia is grim. Mealy is a revolting sounding word. Uh mealy uh. Also the medical definition of amelia means 'absence of limbs.' Why on earth a doctor would call her child it, I've no idea. (Peter Andre's wife.)
